Scope This Section of BS 142 is @ lower level document specifying requirements for single input energizing quantity measuring relays with dependent specified time, as a particular sub-family of measuring relays whose general requirements are specified in Section 2.2 ‘Specification for the general requirements for measuring relays used for protection’ NOTE. The titles of the publications referred ton thie standard are listed onthe inside back cover. 2. Definitions For the purposes of this Section of this British Standard, the definitions given in BS 142 : Section 1.1 apply. 3. Characteristic values The requirements of clause 3 of BS 142: Section 2.2 + 1982 shall apply subject to the following modifications 10 3.4.2, 3.6.1.1 and 3.6.2.1, 3.4.2 Dependent specified times. There are no specitied values of dependent specified times. The relationship between operating times and characteristic quantity can be expressed by means of a characteristic curve. ‘The shape of this curve shall be declared by the manufacturer For dependent time relays whose operating times decrease with an increase of characteristic quantity (relays with decreasing function, ie, inverse characteristic)*, the most common characteristic curves follow a law of the following form: where is the theoretical operating time; ks the constant characterizing the relay; G isthe value of the characteristic quantity: Gy is the basic value of the characteristic quantity; is the index characterizing the algebraic function Three classes of curves following the above general formula are defined as follows: type A for a'< 05; type B for 05 1.5, For relays whose operating time curves conform to type A. the standard Normal inverse characteristic is obtained by using values of & and @ equal to 0.14 and 0.02 respectively For relays whose operating time curves conform to types other than type A in the above family. the manufacturer shall declare the values of k and a, for which the following are the preferred values iB «1/135 | 800 afio | 20 1 increase with characteristic quantity are sai tobe “with increasing function” dl | | BS 142 : Section 3.2 : 1983 36.1.1 The reference values for influencing quantities and factors and the associated test tolerances shal be as given in table 1, except that the reference magnitude of the input energizing quantity (reference for the determination of variations) for relays with decreasing function of type A, B or C shall be 10 times the reference setting value, Reference parameters of characteristic time curves shall be in accordance with 3.4.2. 3.6.2.1 Limits of the nominal ranges of influencing quantities and factors shall be as given in table 2, except as follows: (1) for relays with characteristic curves of type A, B or C (see 3.4.2), the limits of the effective range of the input energizing quantity shall be declared when they differ from 2 and 20 times the basic value of the characteristic quantity: (2) the manufacturer shall declare the effective range of the input energizing quantity for relays not having characteristics specified in (1). ‘Additional requirements apply in respect of the following {al There shall be neither condensation nor ice formation inside the relay. (b) The manufacturer shall declare the conditions under which the calibration has been made and the effects due to the transient die. component in the a.c. if these are significant, i.e, of the same order of magnitude or greater ‘than the assigned error. In this ease, the manufacturer shall declare the errors for the following three values of time constant, (Oms, 40 ms and 100 ms ‘The reference conditions, both for transient and steady state, shall be in accordance with 3.6.1 Where special conditions of application necessitate the use of values other than those given in table 2, the manufacturer shall declare the values used. 4. Limits of the operative range of the auxiliary energizing quantities ‘The limits of the operating range of the auxiliary energizing quantities shall be as specified in clause 4 of BS 142 : Section 2.2: 1982, 5. Thermal requirements ‘The thermal requirements shall be at specified in clause of BS 142 : Section 2.2 : 1982, 6. Accuracy The requirements of clause 6 of BS 142: Section 2.2 : 1982 shall apply subject to the following modifications to 6.1. 16.1 General. For measuring relays, considerations of accuracy apply to the characteristic quantity and to the specified timets) if any. The accuracy applicable to the characteristic quantity and to the time(s) may be different. Accuracy relating to the characteristic quantity. In a dependent time relay, accuracy is associated only with the basic value and the threshold operating value of the characteristic quantity Gz. The fundamental requirement is that the relay shall not operate at the basic value but shall operate at the threshold operating value, The manufacturer shall state the basic and threshold operating values. ‘The conventional term ‘setting value’ has been applied either to the basic value or to the operating value, For example. for a dependent time relay which operates at the setting, the setting value is the threshold value subject to allowable tolerances (see below). Conversely, some relays are required not to operate at the ‘setting’, is. the ‘setting value’ is the basic value subject to allowable tolerances (see below). The threshold operating value shall be not more than 1.3 times the basic value. Accuracy relating to time, The assigned error shall be declared by the manufacturer as either: (2) a percentage of the theoretical time: or (b) 2 percentage of the theoretical time or 2 fixed maximum time error (where this may exceed the percentage value), whichever is the greater, e.g. 5 % or 20 ms or (6) a fixed maximum time error The assigned error, which may vary over the effective range of the characteristic quantity, ean be declared as {1) A theoretical curve of time plotted against characteristic quantity, bounded by curves representing maximum. and minimum limits of the assigned errors obtained under reference conditions (sae figure A), (2) An assigned error claimed at the maximum limit of the effective range multiplied by stated factors, Corresponding to different values of the characteristic quantity within its effective range. The multiplying factors shall not apply to the fixed maximum time where this is declared, For relays with decreasing function of the types A, B or C the value of the assigned error shall be declared at the ‘maximum limit of the effective range as a percentage of the theoretical time. The assigned error at other points within the effective range shall be related in accordance with table A. BS 142: Section 3.2: 1983 Table A. Assigned errors at defined values of characteristic quantity ‘Assigned error as» multiple of the declared o 28 2 15 5 1 10 1 20 For other types of dependent time relays the manufacturer shall declare the theoretical curve and assigned errors over the effective range, An example of the method of presenting this information is shown in figure A. i I Time \, ! 4 etectve range, —————>} Theoretical euve Character i quant E GG Lower Up é limit mt Giet8Gr 26, 26, 1 Figure A. Mechanical tests The requirements of clause 14 of BS 142 : Section 2.2 1982 shall apply subject to the following modifications to 14. 14.1.1 Test conditions. The relay shall be tested under the following conditions, which shall be fulfilled simultaneously: (a) mounted as for normal service: (b) at rated values of the auxiliary energizing quantities; (6) under reference conditions of all influencing quantities and factors other than the setting (see item (e}) (9) at rates (eycles per min) specified by the manufacturer; (c) for reiays with adjustable settings at the relay’s lowest setting.
