About the Series

Written in the form of a chapter book, “Tales of a Musical Journey” uses a fairy tale setting and
characters to introduce and expand musical concepts. In the series, the young minds are set on a
journey through a fictitious musical land. Entertaining and logically interconnected stories make
the learning of complicated techniques easy and fun. Ear training exercises and theory activities
further train and develop young musical ears. Soundtracks with musical examples and
accompaniments help the student through practice at home and in lessons.
The series is primarily targeted towards 4-7 year old beginning piano students. However, older
beginners will benefit from it as well. Books 1 and 2 cover the span of the first year of study and
will sufficiently prepare the students for classical repertoire. This series should not be used for
self-teaching purposes. Success may only be achieved under the guidance of a trained instructor and the watchful eye of an involved parent.
The series presents theoretical materials in an attractive and easily understood form. First, the students learn the geography of the keyboard
and location of keys. Then, the student is introduced to musical notation through songs, hands-on exercises and activities.
To develop the right technical habits, students need to learn the correct touch, reading notation, listening, and finally combining all of the
aforementioned skills together. This series provides the path for a steady progress and fail-proof achievement of those skills.
The materials can be ordered at: www.IrinaGorin.com
Book 1 and Book 2 are available at Piano Maestro by JoyTunes on the App Store

Book 1:
The primary focus of the first book is to learn the necessary technical skills through freedom and flexibility of all upper body parts;
shoulders, arms, wrists, and fingers. Devoted exclusively to non-legato playing, the first book teaches the correct touch and tone
production starting playing with finger #3. Once the basic skills are acquired, new aspects of piano playing are added.
The rhythm is introduced and developed through clapping, marching, counting out loud and playing with accompaniment. Once an
understanding of rhythmic pulse is grasped, the student will learn the time values of the notes.

Book 2:
In the second book students continue developing technique skills, intensively working on LEGATO and STACCATO articulations,
as well as reviewing NON LEGATO. Students learn notation in the range of four octaves; eighth notes enhance young children’s
rhythm understanding. A wide range of folk tunes and easy classical examples continue developing students’ taste in classical music,
artistry, and expression of performance.

Chapter 1
The Magical Kingdom of Sounds

Once upon a time, in a far-off land, lived a

great King. His name was King Meter. He
ruled over a grand kingdom that spread far
and wide. The wonderful kingdom was filled
with pleasing sights and sweet sounds. All
sorts of creatures lived in the rich lands of
King Meter. One of the wisest and fairest
of them all was Fairy Musicalina. She was a
good friend of King Meter and would come
to the rescue as soon as any musical
trouble would come up. Her advice was
always good and kind.

King Meter lived in a splendid castle with

his two darling children – a young prince by
the name of Rhythm and a young princess
named Melody.

One beautiful day, King Meter threw a big

feast in his castle. He invited all the
musical sounds of the Magical Kingdom,
because he loved music so much. The sounds belonged to the birds of the sky, all the small and large animals from the forests and
mountains, and even to the tiniest insects. All the sounds were very excited to get together. When the feast started, they began
chattering, singing, and hollering at once.

The music from the sounds reached far beyond the lands of King Meter, and soon the kingdom became known as the Magical
Kingdom of Sounds.

Chapter 2
The Piano

Fairy Musicalina wanted the sounds to stay in harmony, joy and peace with each other forever, so she created a perfect musical
instrument for them. This was a place where every sound knew its time and place to sing and make music. She called this instrument
the PIANO.

When you look at the piano, remember that it is a magical place where all the sounds live. When we play the piano, we make
beautiful music. Fairy Musicalina is always fluttering around, helping with her magical wand.

Pianos can look very different:

Can you point out the differences and the similarities between these two instruments?
That’s right! They both have keyboards, pedals, and music stands, but one of the pianos is tall and thin, and the other one is low
and wide. What are their names?

_______________________________ ______________________________

The smaller UPRIGHT PIANOS are used for practicing in homes and in smaller rooms. The GRAND PIANOS are used for
performances in larger rooms, churches, and concert halls.

What kind of piano do you have at home? ____________________________

Mechanism
Have you ever looked inside your piano?
Inside every piano, there are many strings. When you press a key, a little hammer strikes a string, which causes it to vibrate. This
is how we make sounds! The harder you press the key, the louder the sound is. If you touch the key lightly, the sound will be very
soft and gentle.* First approach to dynamics.
Posture
The piano is a very serious musical instrument, because it has to take care of its many different sounds. To make the sounds sing
beautiful music, there are rules we have to follow when playing the piano.*

Sit on the front half of the bench.

Adjust the piano bench or use a cushion to make yourself taller.

Your elbows and wrists either have to be at the level of the keyboard, or slightly

above it.

Your elbows should not touch your body, and your arms should be slightly curved

away from the body.

Your back should be straight and relaxed.

Your feet should be standing firmly on the floor or a pedal extender (step stool)

and not hanging in the air.

After the sounds learned how to sing and play together in harmony, Fairy Musicalina generously provided upright and grand pianos
for every room of the Castle. Now, everyone who lived at the castle could learn and enjoy singing and playing every day.

1. Practice how to sit at the piano. Follow each step listed above.

*Teacher’s demonstration is required

Chapter 3
Low and High Sounds

Once the sounds had settled in, they started noticing the differences amongst themselves. Every key on the piano sang with a
different voice. The keys on the left side of the piano keyboard sounded very thick and deep, like the voices of the big, heavy
creatures. Fairy Musicalina named them - the Low Sounds. The keys on the right side of the piano keyboard sounded thin and
bright, like the voices of small animals, birds and insects. Fairy Musicalina named them - the High Sounds.

Using crayons, color the keyboard below: the low sounds with a blue crayon, the middle sounds with a green crayon, and the
high sounds with a yellow crayon.

When sounds move from LOW to HIGH, they go UP. When sounds move from HIGH to LOW, they go DOWN.

Listen to your teacher play a series of sounds in different parts of

the keyboard. If you hear the sounds getting higher, point to the
clown that is going up the stairs. If you hear the sounds getting
lower, point to the clown that is going down the stairs.

Gather your favorite plush animal toys. Next, arrange them in a special way on the keyboard. Place the animals that make low
sounds, medium sounds, and high sounds in their appropriate places.
Gently press the keys with the toys and say “My sound is low,” or “My sound is high,” or “My sound is middle.”
Listen to the soundtracks #1 - 4 (Camille Saint-Saens. “Hens and Roosters,” “Elephant,” “Tortoise,” and “Aquarium.”)
As you listen to each of the pieces, think which animal the music is about and point to the picture of that animal below.

Listen to the same soundtracks again. When you hear the low sounds, point to the left side of the keyboard. When you hear
the high sounds, point to the right side of the keyboard.
What kind of sounds would a bumblebee make? What about an airplane? What about a tiny mouse?

1. Learn the location of the low sounds, the middle sounds, and the high sounds.
2. Listen to the soundtracks #1-4 and try acting out each of the animals.

Chapter 4
Weeping Willow Tree
Everyone was thrilled to have the new pianos in the Magical Kingdom of Sounds. Only Princess
Melody seemed as though she did not enjoy these wonderful musical instruments. The princess
really wanted to play, but every time she tried, her stiff arms and straight fingers made the
sounds screech and growl at her. The princess tried again and again, but nothing worked. One day,
she could not take it any longer. Princess Melody sat down under a big weeping willow tree and
cried her heart out.
While the princess was crying, the big heavy branches of the weeping willow tree leaned down to
comfort her. Princess Melody admired the tree’s beautiful branches, hanging down gracefully and
elegantly. They reminded her of her own arms and hands, hanging down loosely from her
shoulders. With her arms relaxed, the princess felt so free that she at once ran to the piano. Lifting her arms from her lap, just
like the heavy branches of the weeping willow tree, Princess Melody set them gently on the keys. This motion felt so wonderful
that she did it over and over again. Surprisingly, the sounds did not screech or growl at the princess. That was so exciting!
Stand up straight and tall in the middle of the room, like the weeping willow tree. Let your arms hang loosely from your
shoulders. Start swaying your arms slowly in front of your body. Pretend that they are tree branches on a windy day.
Gradually start rolling your back forward, and then slowly come back up. Continue swaying your arms. Feel them hanging free
and heavy.
Sit nice and tall on the piano bench and take a deep breath. As you let your breath out, relax your arms.
Feel them hang loosely down from your shoulders along your sides.
Lift your relaxed and heavy arms and hands and gently land them on the keys. Your hands would take the shape of the
gentle fists.
Lift your arms from the keys and gently land them in your lap.

Watching the princess moving her arms so gracefully at the piano, the prince, king and other inhabitants of the Magical Kingdom
wanted to join her and practice together. It was so much fun!

1. Listen to the soundtrack #5 and move your arms gracefully with the music of the piece “Harmony of the Angels” by
composer Friedrich Burgmuller.

Chapter 5
The Orchard
After the “Weeping Willow Tree” exercise, Fairy Musicalina invited everyone to
the fruit orchard. There were many different trees: rosy apples, juicy peaches,
and ripe plums. Prince Rhythm wanted to try some delicious fruits and began
picking them with delight. The fruits were rounded and smooth. As the prince’s
fingers wrapped carefully around the apples, Fairy Musicalina pointed out that
holding the round objects in the hands helps to form a perfect hand position for
playing the piano.

Put a small ball in the middle of your palm.

Carefully wrap your fingers around it. Hold
the ball gently; pretending it is an apple or a
ripe peach. Don’t squeeze it too hard, so the
juice doesn’t come out.

Bring your rounded hand with the ball to the piano keyboard and gently place it on the
keys.

Lift your Right Hand (RH) with the ball from your lap to the keys and return it back to your lap. Remember Weeping Willow
Tree movements of your arms. Repeat the exercise with the Left Hand (LH).

Princess Melody and many other citizens of the Magical Kingdom followed the prince’s example and formed a rounded hand
position holding the fruits in their hands. They were getting ready to play the piano!

1. Practice “Weeping Willow Tree,” and “Apple” exercises a few times every day.
2. Draw a picture of your favorite rounded fruit.

Chapter 6
The Keyboard

As soon as Fairy Musicalina showed the sounds their places in the piano,
they started sounding very beautiful together.
To make it easier to find the right sounds to play, fairy Musicalina
divided the keyboard into seven neighborhoods and called them the
OCTAVES. Each neighborhood/octave had two houses: one small and one
big.
The small house had two black keys on the roof and three white keys
with rooms inside the house. The big houses had three black keys on the
roof and four white keys with rooms in the house.

Close your eyes. Find and gently touch the two black key roofs of the smaller
houses in the different neighborhoods (the octaves). With your eyes closed, find as many small houses as
you can. Do the same for the big houses with three black keys.

As you gently touch the black keys of the little houses with your hand shaped into a gently fist, say the words written
under them each of the house.

Little House, Two black keys. Little Mouse’s Eating cheese.

Do the same for the three black keys of the big houses.

Three black keys On the roof, Our big house’s Wa-ter-proof.

Beautiful rainbow rose in the sky and silently watched the student’s
hands traveling from one group of black keys to another. Then the
rainbow suggested the hands to relax and fly over the entire keyboard
from the low to the high sounds, following the rainbow’s shape. The
hands loved to fly over a keyboard with a colorful rainbow, gliding up
high, and then carefully landing down on the black or white keys gently,
like on the puffy clouds, touching them with the tips of the middle
fingers.

As you make “Rainbow” movements above the keyboard, recite this rhyme with expression.
“Rainbow purple, rainbow blue,
Rainbow green and yellow too.
Rainbow orange, rainbow red,
Rainbow’s shining overhead.”

1. At home, draw your own picture of the rainbow.

2. Practice the tunes on the black keys, and move your hands gently and gracefully, drawing beautifully shaped rainbows
above the keyboard.
3. Make sure you listen to the sounds and watch your supple wrists and relaxed arms.
4. Draw big red roofs for the three black key houses and smaller blue roofs for the two black key houses on the
keyboard below.

Chapter 7 Technique
Hands and Fingers
Princess Melody learned how to form a rounded hand position and could not wait any longer to start playing with her fingers. She
asked Fairy Musicalina to help her.
At first, the fairy asked the princess to outline each of the princess’s hands in the boxes below, and then label each hand with the
letters RH for the Right Hand and LH for the Left Hand.

Outline each of your hands in the boxes below.

Label the Left Hand with the letter “LH” and the Right Hand with the letters “RH”.

Left Hand (LH) Right Hand (RH)

Once Princess Melody traced each one of her fingers, she wanted to get to know them really well. Even though there were five
fingers on each hand, they were all different lengths, sizes and even shapes. Finger #3 was the tallest and the strongest finger
on each hand. It was right in the middle of the hand. The thumbs were very oddly shaped and a little stubborn. They demanded
to be numbered with #1. The littlest fingers were #5, because they were the last. Fingers #2 and #4 surrounded the Tall
finger #3 and helped to keep order as well as shape the hands better.

With your teacher’s help, number every finger on each hand that you just
traced.

Hold up your hands and wiggle one finger at a time at your teacher’s request.
Let’s call it “Wiggling Fingers” exercise.

1. Do the “Wiggling Fingers” exercise with your parent’s help every

day. It will help you learn your finger numbers really well.
2. Label each hand below with RH letters for the Right hand and LH
letters for the Left hand.
3. Label finger numbers on each of the hands below.
4. Circle finger # 3 with a red crayon.

Chapter 8
The Farm

The next day, King Meter, Prince Rhythm and Princess Melody decided to pay
a visit to Old McDonald's farm and share the exciting news about how much
they had already learned about music. “Now we can play the piano!” happily
exclaimed Princess Melody. Old McDonald’s family was very musical and they
had a big old piano in their farm house. Old McDonald really wanted his
friends to play a song about the farm on the piano. It was his favorite song.
“Of course we’ll play it for you!” exclaimed the princess.
She began warming up her fingers with the pencil and
eraser. Finger #3 was the first one to warm up.

Take a pencil with an eraser in one hand and with

the other hand, use finger #3 to press gently but
firmly on the eraser. While you do this, say:
“My third finger is so strong.
It exercises all day long!”

Find the nearest group of three black keys and press them the same way as you pressed on the eraser.
Listen to the soundtrack #6 “Old McDonald” and at the time of the words E-I-E-I-O play each of the three black keys,
starting with the higher black key and going down to the bottom one, just like in the picture below. Aim for the golden
diamonds to place your rounded finger #3.

Sing the song “Old McDonald” with the soundtrack #6. Name the different animals of the farm and play “E-I-E-I-O” with
each hand at the different parts of the keyboard on the three black keys.

The hands and fingers were very proud of having learned to play “Old McDonald.” But
all the practicing made them feel tired and achy. Suddenly, instead of beautiful
gentle hands, they turned into scary twisted monster claws. The fingers touching the
keys were tense and stiff. The keys became terrified and screeched in terror.
Everyone got really frightened, only Fairy Musicalina was quietly smiling. A piano
monster was hiding under the piano bench and turned the hands into monster claws.
The princess knew just the thing to do to get rid of him. He was very afraid of
relaxation exercises, so the princess reminded the hands of the weeping willow and
rainbow movements between the sounds. Immediately, the fingers remembered how
free and comfortable it felt to float from key to key, and as they relaxed, the
monster shrank and shamefully walked away. The keys were relieved and began
singing again with their beautiful voices.
When you fingers are tense, the monster might return and try to turn the hands into
monster claws again. You never know when the monster might be watching your piano
playing, so make sure you relax your hands often and do not let the monster claws to
take over.

1. Do warm-up exercise with pencil with eraser before each practice session.
2. Play “Old McDonald” song with soundtrack #6.
3. Play the “E-I-E-I-O” with the RH (Right Hand) and then with the LH (Left Hand).
4. Play and sing along.

*For extra challenge the song can be learned by ear in its entirety.

Chapter 9
The Feast
Soon, everyone gathered around the big wooden table to celebrate
the special friendship with the royal guests. McDonald’s daughter
Mary baked her special hot cross buns. She knew how to make them
just right: puffy, soft, with golden crust. She filled the buns with
sweet strawberry jelly, which she made herself, using the ripest
berries.
During the dinner, some jelly was accidentally spilled on the piano
keys. At first everyone got very upset about it, but finger #3 was
very happy. “I love pressing into the Jelly key. Listen to how deep and beautiful it sounds when I press
the key through that soft and yummy strawberry,” he said. Now all the guests wanted to try to press the keys through the
jelly and strawberries. It was really fun to feel how deep the sound was. The song “Hot Cross Buns” was waiting to be played
and sung.* (soundtrack #7)
Warm up your fingers #3 on the pencil and eraser.
Press deeply, slowly, and firmly, feeling your finger dip into the squishy
strawberry lying on top of each key.

Beautiful butterfly flew by and heard the

sounds of music. She landed on the one of
the piano keys to rest and listen to the
beautiful songs. Soon, the butterfly took
off and flew to the other key inviting the
hands and fingers to follow her. They all
loved this game and played it for a while.
The hands followed the butterfly from one key (black or white) to another. They landed on each key like a butterfly on a flower,
then took off and gracefully flew to the next keys to play again. The piano sang joyfully with all its sounds: High, Middle, and Low.
The hands and wrists were so relaxed and graceful and flew above the keyboard just like butterflies. The Butterfly loved the
sounds and the hands so much, that she always came by when new songs were played and lead the hands and fingers in a very
elegant movement from key to key.
Listen to the soundtrack #8 (Edward Grieg. “Butterfly”) and move your arms and hands with music above the keyboard like a
flying butterfly.
Play “Hot Cross Buns” on three black keys in any part of the keyboard with the RH. Fly like a butterfly to a different group
of three black keys and play the song again.
Repeat the same steps with the LH.

By the end of the day, everyone was happy, but tired. It was the time to take care of the
farm animals and prepare them for the night. Mary started walking toward the barn, humming
a song about her favorite little lamb:
“Mary had a Little Lamb, Little Lamb, Little Lamb,
Mary had a Little Lamb, its fleece was white as snow.”
Princess Melody heard the song and immediately started picking it out on the piano by ear.
With you teacher’s help, try to play this song by ear on three black keys. *

1. Play “Hot Cross Buns” several times a day with finger # 3 of each hand
with the soundtrack #7.
2. Review the song “Old McDonald” (track #6).

*Teacher’s assistance required.

Chapter 10
Welcome to the New Houses

The sounds that lived in the piano were very friendly and musical. They waited patiently while the hands and fingers played the lovely

Chapter 11
King Meter and Wizard Metronome
King Meter was the great king of the Magical Kingdom
of Sounds. He had a big and powerful army. No enemy
dared to invade the beautiful musical kingdom.
During festive parades on the Main Square of the
kingdom, there was a legendary marching band. King’s
most wise and famous Wizard Metronome was always
in front of the marching band, conducting with his
baton. King Meter could watch his parades for hours,
feeling very proud and powerful.
Wizard Metronome was mainly respected for his skills
of keeping music sounds disciplined, organized and
playing at their assigned times.
Wizard Metronome used his baton to guide the
musicians to play fast, slow, and at other different
speeds. In the Magical Kingdom of Sounds, the speed of music was called the TEMPO. Everyone always listened to the steady beat
of the Wizard Metronome and played on TEMPO.

Set Wizard Metronome to the number 60, and march around the room to the beat. Now change to the number 80 and do
the same. Can you still march as the metronome ticks at the number 100?
For an extra challenge add a clap to each step.
Set Wizard Metronome to the number 60. Listen to the ticking for a few moments. Then play and hold any key with your
RH (Right Hand) finger #3 and count the ticks before the sound disappears. How many ticks have you counted? ____
When the sound disappears, take off your wrist from the keyboard, like a weeping willow tree branch lifted off by the
wind. Land your hand slowly in your lap.

Do the same with your LH (Left Hand) finger #3.

music (soundtrack #17). Clap with each step if you can.
With your teacher’s help, play note G on every other beat of the music with
finger #3 of your RH, then LH. For an extra challenge, alternate the hands
or play with both hands on two G notes in different octaves.

Finger #3 was a proud finger and was getting stronger every day. However, other fingers
were ready to begin playing too. Fairy Musicalina decided it was time to let finger #2 to
play the piano.

Prepare finger #2 of your RH. Warm it up with the exercise “Pencil and
Eraser” and play note G with “March” by S. Prokofiev (#17).
Do the same with finger #2 of your LH.

Chapter 12
Prince Rhythm

King Meter’s oldest son Prince Rhythm was the most adventurous young fellow in all the lands of the
kingdom. Nothing could frighten him, because he was so brave. Prince Rhythm did not enjoy the
parades and marching with Wizard Metronome all day long. He loved adventures and preferred to roam
and explore the unknown lands instead. The sounds loved the young prince and would often accompany
him in case something unusual was about to happen.
As the prince would walk through the forests and hike the mountains, sometimes his steps would be
short and quick, and at other times his long strides would resonate with long sounds. Prince would put
different long and short sounds in a certain order and create the most unique and interesting patterns.
These patterns came to be known as the RHYTHMIC PATTERNS. When the citizens of the Magical
Kingdom saw the prince with one of his RHYTHMIC PATTERNS, they would stop and clap out the
sounds as a sign of a devoted greeting to the prince.

Can you make up your own rhythmic pattern to greet Prince Rhythm?
Play different rhythmic patterns on random white keys with your finger #3, then #2.
Name the white keys that you played.

Since everyone could hear the long and short sounds, but no one could see them, Prince Rhythm decided to make them
visible. He decided that long sounds should look like white circles:

For short sounds, Prince Rhythm picked black circles:

That was just perfect! Now they were easy to tell apart and no one could mix them up!

Chapter 13
Princess Melody
King Meter had a beautiful young daughter, Princess Melody. She was the sweetest and loveliest
girl in the kingdom and was beloved by everybody. But, the most special thing about the princess
was her stunning voice. The sounds loved her so much that they always followed her everywhere she
went.
The princess lived in the highest tower of the castle at the top of a long stairway. On the way to
her room, she loved playing with the sounds that followed her on the stairs. Sometimes they would
run up and down, and then skip some stairs, and then they would turn and twirl around. Every time
they did it, a beautiful melody would be created.

Prince Rhythm’s long and short sounds were eager to help the high and low sounds to make the tunes. They were always nearby and
as soon as the princess came to the stairs with her high and low sounds, the long and short sounds were ready to serve.
Everyone in the Magical Kingdom loved the songs and wanted to learn to play them on the piano.

The first song on the stairs was about a butterfly that lived in the garden. She was flying from one stair step to another followed
by the piano students’ relaxed arms and wrists. The princess adored the butterfly and really wanted to be friends with her.

Chapter 14
The Musical Castle

Everyone in the Magical Kingdom of Sounds was quickly learning how

to make up songs using the long and short sounds and putting them on
the stairs of the castle. King Meter, Wizard Metronome, Prince
Rhythm, and Princess Melody were very pleased! They loved the music
so much that they could sing and play it all day long. There were so
many songs made up on the stairs of the castle!
One day, Prince Rhythm and Princess Melody decided to share their
songs with the citizens of other kingdoms. The royal family sent out
invitations to the music lovers all around the world. As soon as the
first visitors started arriving to the castle eager to hear the
beautiful music, no one in the Magical Kingdom of Sounds could
remember any songs. The sounds forgot their order and direction.
The visitors left the kingdom being very disappointed and frustrated.
Prince Rhythm and
Princess Melody realized
they needed to learn how
to write their songs on a
paper, so that no one
would ever forget them
and be able to play and
sing them anytime and anywhere. But they did not know how.
When Fairy Musicalina found out about what happened in the Magical Kingdom, she
came up with a great idea right away: “I am going to create a castle on a paper and
give it to the sounds, so that they will know where to go when making music.” Fairy
waved her magical wand and right out of thin air, there appeared a gorgeous castle
on the paper.

Fairy Musicalina named the castle “The Grand Staff,” because it was really big and roomy. It had many stairways. All the sounds
could fit in the castle’s five stories above the ground and five stories in the basement, below the ground.

Everyone was amazed at Fairy Musicalina’s creation and rushed to explore it.
The high sounds immediately occupied the top levels of the castle, because they thought they had to be high above the ground. And
the low sounds really liked the bottom levels, as they felt they would look and sound lower there.
Fairy Musicalina asked the sounds to inhabit not only each of the stories (lines) of the castle, but the spaces between them also, so
every musical sound could fit there and no one would be left behind.
That’s how the inside of the castle looked with all the sounds in it.
Now, everyone had to learn how not to get lost in the Grand Staff castle. They needed to learn counting lines and spaces first.

The lines and spaces looked just like the floors in the real castle. Going upstairs, the sounds counted the lines from #1 to #5 and
spaces #1 to #4 in an upward direction.
Going down to the basement, the sounds counted the lines from #1 to #5 and spaces #1 to #4 in the downward direction.
Now the sounds could write many different songs on these lines and in the spaces between the lines.

Princess Melody was thrilled to see her dear sounds so happy. They loved their new homes, musical lines and spaces, but above all,
everyone in the kingdom could write their songs and never forget them.
At the end of the long day everybody was a little tired. Prince Rhythm suggested that his friends go to bed, so that the next
morning they would feel rested and ready to learn and write many more songs.

Chapter 15
Finger Neighbors

The next morning Princess Melody could not wait to start playing the songs written on the Grand Staff
castle’s lines and spaces. However, her fingers #2 and #3 were getting tired of playing all the songs.
“Why don’t we invite another finger to play with us?” they wondered. Finger #4 could not wait for his turn
to play. “I know I have to warm up with pencil and eraser first,” said finger #4 and immediately started
exercising.

Warm up your finger #4 on the pencil with eraser.

Play different keys on the piano with finger #4 of each hand. Imagine pressing the keys
through jelly. Keep your finger rounded and firm.

Fingers #2 and #3 were so happy to have another finger to play with. As they were all neighbors, they decided to work as a team.
“Let’s warm up all together!” they shouted.

Place fingers #2, #3 and #4 on the group of three black keys. Carefully play
Each finger in the following order on the key that is under each finger. Listen
to the fingers’ conversations.

As fingers #2, #3 and #4 were enjoying their conversations, the celebration on the Grand Staff’s lines and spaces continued. The
notes did not stop exploring all the possibilities of moving up and down the stairs of the beautiful castle. They even invited long and
short sounds to participate in music making on the lines and in the spaces of the Grand Staff. Fairy Musicalina kindly treated
everyone with tasty popcorn.

Clap the rhythmic pattern below. Say the words while clapping.
Play the song with finger #3 first.
Then place your fingers #2, #3 and #4 on three black keys and try to play the tune with

Chapter 16
The Ledger Line
King Meter was very glad to see all the sounds loving their new homes in the Grand Staff
Castle. As a very caring king, he wanted to help the sounds to keep the order and to follow
the rules. But, he could not take care of the sounds if he did not have his own room in the
Grand Staff castle. Besides, the king wanted to be able to take care of both high and low
staves. The king asked Fairy Musicalina for an advice.
Fairy was very kind. She created a unique line for King Meter in between the top and the
bottom staves and called it a LEDGER LINE. This line was going right through the middle of
the circle/note, which made it look just like a grand throne for the king. Ledger line was
short and could easily travel toward the top or the bottom staff, depending where King
Meter wanted to be at the moment. King’s beloved Cat C did not want to part from his king,
so they started living together in their new home. Since then their note was named MIDDLE
C, as it was in the middle of the keyboard and in between the staves.

Practice tracing the ledger line notes Middle C, and draw three

Prince Rhythm and Princess Melody started visiting the Grand Staff often. The princess loved high sounds on the top staff and
wanted to play and sing songs with them. She felt very comfortable playing the songs with her RIGHT HAND. The prince really got
along with the low sounds on the bottom staff and loved playing the notes with the LEFT HAND. “But which hand will play the
Middle C note in between the staves?” the sounds hollered at once.
King Meter smiled. He pointed out that when his LEDGER LINE note was written under the top staff, the princess should play it
with the RIGHT HAND. Whenever the Ledger Line note moved to the bottom staff, it was the prince’s turn to play this note with
his LEFT HAND. The order in the Grand Staff castle was restored once again.

Play the Middle C with the Right Hand (RH) fingers #2, #3 or #4 and then the same with the Left Hand (LH).

1. Practice writing Middle C note under the top staff and above the low staff on a separate sheet of

Chapter 17
The Brace and the Double Bar Line
On one occasion, when King Meter visited the sounds’ castle, he noticed that the Grand Staff did not have any doors, and the sounds
could easily fall out from their lines and spaces. That was not safe and quite dangerous.
King Meter ordered a beautifully carved front door, called a BRACE, to keep the notes safe at the front entrance of the castle. He
also had delivered a heavy double back door, called a DOUBLE BAR LINE, to be placed in the back of the grand staff and secure the
well-being of the sounds that happened to be near the end of each song.
The sounds now felt completely safe and deeply cared for in their castle.

This is what the grand staff castle looked like now:

Treble Clef and Bass Clef

To ensure the sounds didn’t get lost in the Grand Staff and could always find their
home notes on both top and bottom staves, King Meter asked his most mighty army
generals to guard the castle and help the sounds in case of an emergency.
The general, who took care of the high sounds on the top staff, was named the
TREBLE CLEF (“treble” means “high”). The other general was named the BASS
CLEFF (“bass” means “low”). Both generals loved their places in the grand staff
castle and took a good care of their notes.

Chapter 20
King Meter Meets the Deer
The king loved and cared for all the sounds of his Magical Kingdom. He became very excited when his
closest neighbor on the right, the deer, invited the king’s cat C to play and sing a couple of new songs.
King Meter asked the deer the address of his home note on the staff. The deer gave out his address
right away: “A SPACE NOTE UNDER THE FIRST LINE OF THE TREBLE STAFF.” King Meter and Cat C
immediately memorized this address.

Chapter 21
More Long and Short Sounds

Prince Rhythm loved his rhythmic patterns and spent all his time trying
to make new rhythms. Unfortunately, he had only long and short sounds
(black and white circles) to work with. It was not enough for curious and
adventurous Prince Rhythm. He decided to open his own rhythm
laboratory in one of the castle’s towers and try out something new.
After many different experiments, Prince Rhythm invented a new, very
long note, which was named a WHOLE NOTE.
Surprisingly, Prince Rhythm did not seem happy, but rather confused.
How to make all the notes look different?

Fairy Musicalina immediately came to the rescue. She decided to change the appearance of the notes. Now
the short, long and very long notes had a very distinctive and slick look.

The former black circle – the short sound - received a stem and was named a QUARTER NOTE.
It walked or played on every beat, and received ONE (1) count.

STEM
STEM
The former white circle – the long sound, received a stem too, and was named a HALF NOTE.
It took two beats for each step, and was counted ONE-TWO (1-2).

The new, WHOLE NOTE looked just like a white circle now. It was so long that it
made the Wizard Metronome tick four times and had everyone count
ONE-TWO-THREE-FOUR (1-2-3-4).

The news about WHOLE NOTES spread far and wide. Everyone in the musical kingdom was
thrilled to learn about new musical symbol. The monkeys that lived in the kingdom’s forest
and spent their days swinging on the branches of the tall, lean trees, wanted to visit the
sounds and meet the WHOLE NOTE. But they needed something to swing on. The piano did
not have branches. But our monkeys were very smart: instead of the tree branches, they
used the piano students’ arms to swing on. And above all, monkeys loved strawberry jelly and
were hoping to get the sweet and tasty treat in the castle.
The sounds of the piano were so happy to see the monkeys that they chanted their song
while monkeys enjoyed swinging on the arms for all four beats of the WHOLE NOTES.

Swing, monkeys
On the tree,
Try our Jelly
Freeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Gently and deeply dip the rounded fingertip #3 of the RH into a jelly key,
either black or white. Lightly and slowly swing the arm away from your body and say the words of the chant. Try the same
exercise with the LH.
Repeat this exercise, counting out loud 1-2-3-4 for each swing of the arm.

The monkeys could not wait to participate in the new songs with the whole notes. Prince Rhythm immediately made up a new
rhythmic pattern using quarter, half, and whole notes.
Wizard Metronome started ticking at the tempo 60, and everyone began clapping and counting these notes.

It was Princess Melody’s turn to make up a tune

to this rhythmic pattern. Joyfully, the princess
started working. In a few minutes new song was
ready.

the Wizard Metronome. Cat C always followed his king everywhere.
For the next song “Rain, Rain, Go Away,” King Meter and Cat C excused themselves and left to run the royal errands. Their friends
missed them a lot and sang a song, wishing King Meter and Cat C would come back soon.

Chapter 23
The Math Game

After new QUARTER, HALF and WHOLE notes were introduced to the citizens of the kingdom of sounds, everyone wanted to get

Repeat Sign

Princess Melody had a very close and devoted friend parrot. His name was the REPEAT SIGN, because
he loved to repeat everything he heard. The parrot Repeat Sign followed the princess almost
everywhere she went. Princess Melody loved the parrot’s company, because she was surrounded with
so much more music when he repeated all the songs.
Whenever people and sounds would see the princess with her friend parrot, everyone immediately
knew that the song would be repeated the second time from the beginning exactly the same way.

In the musical castle, the repeat sign looks like this:

The parrot was a very playful bird, and sometimes he would hide behind the double bar line, so that no one could see him. However,
our friends knew that he was present, because they could see his two eyes looking curiously between the lines next to the double
bar line.

In the next song find and circle the repeat signs.

King’s Jesters: Forte and Piano
King Meter had two jesters. They both were very entertaining, but
very different. One jester was always happy and loud. The other one
was sad and quiet. The happy jester’s name was FORTE (loud). The
quiet one’s name was PIANO (soft). They accompanied King Meter very
often to entertain the citizens of the Magical Kingdom.
One day they came to King Meter and said: “We want to help you at the
sounds’ Grand Staff castle. We can tell the sounds when to play loudly
and happy, and when to play quietly and sadly.”
King Meter loved the idea. He asked the sounds to be carefully

Chapter 28
The Bar Lines and the Measures

Since so many notes could participate in making the songs, sometimes the Grand Staff would become crowded and unsafe. This
worried King Meter, because he really cared about the wellbeing and comfort of the sounds and did not want anyone to get hurt.
Fairy Musicalina, as usual, was at king’s side, giving him valuable advice.
She suggested building the walls in the Grand Staff and making the actual rooms for the sounds. It was a brilliant idea and
everyone loved it. The rooms were called the MEASURES, and the walls between them were called the BAR LINES.
The measures were so cozy and welcoming. To be fair to everyone, the king ordered the measures to be all the same sizes.

Chapter 29
Time Signature
When the sounds got their own room-measures, they wanted to have a big celebration to
play and sing many songs. But different songs required different rhythms and number of
beats in each measure. The sounds seemed really confused; they did not know how to
organize themselves in the rooms.
Wizard Metronome was very troubled by that and wanted to help out. He asked two of the
strongest soldiers of king Meter’s army to come and hold the posts at the doors of the
grand staff as the doormen. Wizard named them TIME SIGNATURE and they quickly
figured out how to restore the order in the Grand Staff castle. They allowed a certain
number of beats into each room for every particular song. To make it clear for everyone,
the TIME SIGNATURE doormen put a big sign at the door with magical looking numbers.
The top number showed how many beats would fit in each room, and the bottom number
made sure that each beat was equal to a quarter note beat.
When everybody showed up at the party, the Grand Staff castle was calm and organized. All the sounds and their guests knew
their times to sing and place to be. Everyone loved the doormen. Princess Melody treated everyone with very tasty ice cream.
The new song about the ice cream was ready to be played. The sounds were looking carefully at the TIME
SIGNATURE. The sign showed:
Everyone knew what it meant: there were only two beats in each measure allowed.
Before playing the song, everyone wanted to practice writing this TIME SIGNATURE on the Grand Staff.

Chapter 30
Dotted Half Note

Prince Rhythm continued enjoying all the short and long notes to build his rhythmic patterns, but he never
stopped wondering how come quarter notes get one beat, half notes get two beats, whole notes get four beats,
but there are no notes that get three beats. Prince Rhythm was determined to create that note. He worked for
days in his rhythm laboratory, and finally he found a solution. He decided to use a dot next to a half note, and
that dot would add another beat to the value of the half note. He called the new note the DOTTED HALF NOTE.
“It is a perfect note for 3/4 time signature,” Prince Rhythm could not wait to share the news with his friends!

Chapter 31
Mezzo Forte and Mezzo Piano
Jester Forte and Jester Piano worked very hard at the grand
staff castle trying to make music loud and soft, using their f
and p signs. But sometimes the sounds asked the jesters to
take it a little easy and relax, so that forte would not sound as
loud, and piano would not sound as soft. Jesters did not know
how to do that and asked Fairy Musicalina. With one move of
the fairy’s wand, the letter “m” joined the signs f and p (mf
and mp). Everyone was wondering what this letter meant, so
Fairy Musicalina explained that letter “m” represents the word
“mezzo” or “medium.” When it appears in front of the sign, f, it
means “medium loud” and is pronounced “MEZZO FORTE.”
When this letter appears in front of the sign p, it means “medium soft” and is pronounced
“MEZZO PIANO.”
Fairy Musicalina also mentioned that f, p, mf and mp belonged to the musical family of DYNAMIC SIGNS.

Chapter 32
The Birch Tree
One day the prince, princess, and their friends decided to go out for a walk in the
kingdom’s forest to get some fresh air. The summer was in a full swing and the weather
was perfect. The friends were walking and chatting cheerfully. Suddenly, they saw a
beautiful birch tree standing alone on the big hill. It looked so lonely, because there were
no other trees around it.
“Why are you so sad?” asked the princess.
The birch tree began its story. “A long time ago, there was a big storm. The lightning hit
the biggest tree on this hill and started a huge fire. I was still just a tiny seed in the
ground and the fire did not reach me, but everything else on this hill was burned down.
All my life I have been all alone here, since other trees do not grow on this hill anymore.”
This sad story brought tears to the princess’s eyes. “I am going to visit you very often,
so you don’t feel lonely anymore!” she promised. Princess Melody asked her friends to
make up a song about the birch tree, so other inhabitants of the Magical Kingdom of
Sounds would find out about this sad story and plant trees, bushes, and flowers around
the birch tree.

Does being lonely make you sad?

Chapter 33
Freddy the Frog

Did you know that all princesses have a special fondness for frogs? One day, Princess Melody was sitting by the cool pond and
humming a cheerful tune. A frog named Freddy, who lived at the pond, heard the princess’s beautiful voice. Even though Freddy was
very shy, he hopped closer to listen. Princess Melody noticed her audience and how interested the frog was in music. It came out
that Freddy loved singing too. Princess Melody decided to introduce the frog to her friend-sounds.
What sound do you think the frog could make?
What will be Freddy’s address?

Play and sing Freddy’s song with accompaniment #48.

Have you noticed finger #5 played Freddy’s note in his song? Warm it up on the pencil with eraser the same way as you used to
warm up other fingers.

Chapter 34
The Rests

One day a terrible injustice fell upon King Meter’s land.

In a neighboring kingdom there lived a magician, named Sir Grumpelino. He became very jealous of King
Meter’s musical kingdom. In his fury, he cast an evil spell on the notes of the kingdom. The spell hit the
sounds and took away their voices. Fairy Musicalina became very upset and cried bitterly. She tried to free
the sounds from the spell, but she could help only some of them. The evil magic still affected other sounds.
Fairy Musicalina gave the enchanted sounds their special symbols and named them RESTS. The rests, just
like sounds, were of different lengths:

The former QUARTER NOTE became a QUARTER REST

The previous HALF NOTE turned into a HALF REST

The past WHOLE NOTE became a WHOLE REST

Everyone loved and respected the enchanted sounds so much, that every time the sounds saw the rests, they greeted them with
silence. The sounds took their friends rests to the royal garden to relax and get adjusted to their new role in music. Very soon
rests felt so important and welcomed in the kingdom that they comfortably took their places in the next song “In the Garden.”

Circle the rests in the song on the next page.

Write each rest ten more times on each of the staves below.

Sir Grumpelino became furious when he found out about rests and their important role in music making. It definitely was not his
plan to have the muted notes feel comfortable and important. Meanwhile, in the garden, our friends started having even more fun
singing new songs and picking raspberries – everyone’s favorite berries.

In the song on the next page, circle whole rests with a red crayon, half rests with a yellow crayon,
and quarter rests with a blue crayon.
Practice each line of “Raspberries” three or more times. Notice the repeat sign.
Carefully follow the dynamic signs.
As you play, have your arms and wrists “breathe.”
Dip your firm fingertips deeply, but slowly and gently into the jelly keys.

Chapter 35
G, the Giraffe
The Giraffe was a very tall and handsome animal. He watched the sound-friends from above the treetops
of the kingdom’s forest for a long time, but he did not want to interrupt their playing. Being very caring,
he was worried about the ant, which was so tiny. Giraffe decided to introduce himself and offer his help
in making the songs and protecting his tiny neighbor, the ant.
Giraffe’s voice on the G note was deep and low.
Sounds loved the idea of giraffe’s G note helping in the Grand Staff castle. The ant was especially happy
to get such a strong and tall next door neighbor.

Giraffe moved into the first space of bass clef staff. He liked his new home so much, that he painted all the walls of his room
orange – the same color as his fur. While painting, giraffe made up a song, so that everyone would get to know him better.
In the song on the next page, find all the G notes and circle them with a brown crayon.
Play and sing “The Giraffe” (soundtrack #52).

The Giraffe #52

The silent rests were still a little frightened of the loud sounds. That’s why they loved the night time.
It was so quiet and beautiful at night in the Magical Kingdom of Sounds.
The rests enjoyed watching the starry skies for hours. The stars smiled brightly at them through the darkness and sung a nice
familiar tune.

In the “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Start” song on the next page circle all the whole rests with a blue crayon,
and the half rests with a red crayon.
Name all the notes in the RH part, then LH part.
Circle Giraffe’s G note in the bass clef staff.
Play and sing the song with accompaniment #53.
