PREFACE TO TIIE SECOND EDITIOTI
Sound Advice : A Basis for Listening presents a skills approach to discrete-point listening.
Designed for intermediate to advanced students, it covers the key features of spoken English which
are essential for the comprehension of authentic, natural speech - what English language learners
generally refer to as "fast English." Vhether the source is television, radio, or a casual encounter,
students are regularly frustrated by rapid, relaxed speech. Even universiry-bound students trained in
academic listening are often at a loss when trying to respond to extended conversational discourse.
Through systematic practice with linking, assimilation, and reduced speech, students gain accuracy
in understanding common, yet troublesome, aspects of listening comprehension.
\il7hile the listening phenomena taught have largely remained the same, the accompanying
exercises have been completely reworked. They are now developed around contexts which relate to
the students'everyday lives, such as school, work, and travel. Students are often asked to think
about their own experiences in connection with the exercises, and many of the exercises are followed
by high-interest questions to stimulate pair and group discussion. The chapters begin with a preview
activity to introduce students to troublesome aspects of listening comprehension. They conclude
with chapter review exercises, including creative "chants," to help students consolidate what they
have learned, and test preparation practice.

TO TIIE TEACIIER
Oueruiew
Sound Adaice: A Basis for Listening, Second Edition is designed for intermediate/high intermediate
to advanced students. Although the material can be covered successfully in one term, you may wish
to allow two terms if the material is used primarily as a supplement. Lab use is encouraged, since
many of the exercises are appropriate for self-study. This will allow a class to progress more quickly
through the material. Chapters 12,13, and l4 have been updated to prepare students for the
Listening section of the revised TOEFL@ test, and can be done solely in a lab if time presents a
problem.
It is recommended that you cover the chapters in order, as subject matter is arranged beginning
with the easier, more general concepts and moves to those which are more specific and challenging.
The material spirals so that features found in earlier chapters will be reviewed in subsequent ones.
The exercises deliberately do not encourage extensive pronunciation practice. Since receptive
skills precede productive ones, it is essential that students gain receptive familiarity before they
incorporate the patterns into their own speech. If you would like a text specifically designed for
comprehensive pronunciation practice, contact your publisher's representative about Sound
Advantage: A Pronunciation Book.
Erercise Presenlafion
These suggestions reflect an approach that has been successful for me, however your individual
needs may call for a different approach.
Each chapter, except for the final TOEFL@ chapters, opens with a Preview, where students
hear a statement or question and choose the picture that best matches what they have heard. Since
this is a preview of the material that will be covered in the chapter, it will prove challenging to most
students. Please assure them that the concept will be taught and practiced shortly. While you may
choose to provide answers at this point, the explanations are best saved for when you are covering
that particular topic in the chapter.
After the Preview, you will see the first in a series of Charts. The charts clearly explain the
phenomena that will be presented in the exercises, and include both sound representations and
examples in usage.
After each chart there is a series of Exercises that practice the point which was taught in the
preceding chart. There are a variety of exercise types, including listening for target sounds, fill-in-
the-blanks, and "agree or disagree."
. \fhen students are asked to listen for target sounds, they should hear the sentence at least
twice, and perhaps several times, as they gain familiarity with a particular concept. They will
often be asked to complete a task, such as underlining the linking or identifiiing reduced
words.
. The fill-in-the-blanks can be part of either individual sentences or conversations. uThile
students often find it helpful to hear individual sentences at least twice, it is useful for them to
hear complete conversations once without stopping. Then they can go back and fill in the
blanks, sentence by sentence, as they deal with smaller chunks of information.
. Another type of exercise, called Your Turn, asks students to listen to a series of statements
and answer them, or decide if they agree or disagree. This encourages better comprehension
and helps prevent rote-type responses. These statements also provide an excellent opportunity
for personal expression.
uii
. Many of the exercises conclude with a feature called What do you think? which was
designed specifically to stimulate pair and group discussion.
Finallg there is a Chapter Review, beginning with a "chant" that was specifically developed to
review listening phenomena in a longer, rhythmic passage, as well as encourage discussion and
entertain. Students can practice by first identiffing the target phenomena, then listening, and finally,
if appropriare, practicing with others. Some of the chants highlight potentially difficult vocabulary
and idioms, and I suggest that you review these first. Also in the Chapter Review are the test
practice sections, Test Yourself I and Test Yourself 2 (TOEFL@ Practice). Test Yourself I
follows the style of some of the more current listening tests, which require students to choose an
appropriate response to a question they hear. To simulate test conditions, you may want students to
hear the question only once. Test Yourself 2 (TOEFL@ Practice) is based on the first part of the
Listening section of the TOEFL@ test, where students are presented with short dialogues and must
choose a response for the question they hear. More extensive TOEFL@ practice can be found in
Chapters 12,13, and 14.
Sound-Spbol Correspondence
My primary consideration in choosing a sound-symbol representation was that it be clear and
immediately accessible to students. The sound representations stay as close to the Roman alphabet
as possible so that students unfamiliar with the International Phonetic alphabet will not be at a
disadvantage, and valuable time needed for listening will not be spent on mastering sound
transcription.
Sound representations are indicated in italics. Boldface is used to highlight words or phrases
introduced or explained in the charts. Stressed syllables and words are indicated in capital letters.
Dialect Uariation
The speech in this text is of the dialect spoken in the Central and $Testern regions of the United
States. It is inevitable that some sound representations in the text will differ from some instructors'
speech. As a rule of thumb, if the instructor expects that students will hear a variation or if students
themselves raise the question, it would be helpful to present alternate representations.
