The Rescue

Hayley Green, Grade 5 Short Story 2016

From behind me I heard a door slam shut. I turned around in fear to look for the mysterious wind. A slight breeze
brushed against my soft warming skin, making me shiver. I closed all the windows and sat down on my comfy chair
drinking what was left of my tea, sitting on my old wooden dining table.

I put my warm fluffy coat on and marched out the door excitedly, listening to my favourite music. All of a sudden I
looked up and saw water rushing through the city. Flooding, everything it touches it was huge wild and scary. I ran as
fast as I could to the nearest corner when a huge amount of water tumbled down on me. I couldn’t see anything. All I
could see was a flashing light and I was heading towards it. The flashing light finally stopped, my eyes could see a little
bit, but mostly the cold shivering water.

I awoke, I was kind of dizzy but I managed. I opened my eyes to find myself on an island. A tropical relaxing island that
was surrounded by ocean. I see the calm waves glide across each other. I feel the warm sand in between my shaky feet. I
hear the birds whistling to one another. Where am I? I asked myself. I looked around and no one was there. I started
sprinting towards a palm tree. I knew that I would be here for a while so I started to create a fire.

I grabbed sticks that were scattered on the island and a rock and began rubbing them together furiously. I decided to
create shelter. I cracked a coconut and started to drink it. I finally built a bed and slept for the night. In the morning I
woke up feeling scared, hungry and hot. I began to wonder maybe I can build a raft. I made a plan on the sand. There
was only one problem, where could I get all the supplies? Well that blew it I had no plan. Then I saw a helicopter I knew
this was my chance so I wrote on the sand... H.E.L.P.

Finally, the man rescued me and I was so relieved. He dropped me home even though it was all flooded. The house
was a mess! I saw the repairmen repairing all the flooded homes. I heard my phone ring. I picked up, and it was my sister
from Adelaide. She sounded worried and concerned if I was okay.

I told her I needed someone to be around and to take care of me. I was still shaking from the water but I was fine. I
was waiting for my sister at the airport, it was packed. So many people were around I felt uncomfortable.

Finally, the plane landed safely and I was so relieved because my sister had arrived to stay with me.
