BALLAST SYSTEM Page 2 of 5

I. INTRODUCTION
A ballast water system allows a ship to pump water in and out of very large
tanks to compensate for a change in cargo load, shallow draft conditions, or
weather. A system of pipes and pumps that serves to take in and expel the
liquid ballast of a ship. Ballast usually taken on in ballast tanks (sections of
double hull, deep tanks, on-board and below-decks tanks, and the forepeak
and after peak); in some instances, it takes into the fuel tanks, and on tankers
into the cargo tanks. The productivity of the ballast-system pumps in a
freighter generally calculated to expel all ballast in four to ten hours.

II. OBJECTIVES
The things that we must understand about this document are:
1. To calculate the equipment requirement to determine pump and pipe
specification.
2. To design a ballast system which suitable to the ship.

V. CHAPTER DESCRIPTION
This system designed to be complicated due to the pump that served as the
fluid can only transmit seawater in one direction only. Therefore, the design is
further associated with the public service on Board (General Service System)
is done in other systems interconnect. System design ballasts intimately
connected with the process of loading and unloading in port.
