LEARNING AREA: CHEMISTRY CALA B

CODE: 4024

LEVEL: FORM 4

TOPIC: WATER PURIFICATION

CALA TYPE: INVESTIGATIVE

BACKGROUND
The normal water supply, a borehole, has broken down for the rural community in your nearest village. The only water available for
them is dam water which is usually not suitable for drinking. It contains many different materials which makes it unpleasant and
sometimes harmful for domestic use. Many villagers are not aware of the various techniques and methods they can use to make the
dam water pure enough to drink.
CALA DESCRIPTION
Each learner will collect a 2L sample of dam water. Their task is to make this dam water pure enough to drink.
ACTIVITIES
1. Collecting a sample of dam water.
2. Observing the dam water to see what impurities are in it.
3. Discussing methods of purifying the water.
4. Planning suitable methods of recovering pure water.
5. Carrying out the plan.
6. Describing the appearance of the water after purification.
7. Discussing how successful and practical your method. Would it work for large volumes of water for the villagers?
CALA TIPS
 Collect sample of dam water used by villagers.
 Decide on what methods you will use to purify the dam water.
 Decide on what apparatus and materials you will use.
 Clearly write the procedures for the purification methods you have chosen.
