Trip Distribution 1

A small town has been divided into three traffic zones. An origin-destination survey was conducted
earlier this year and yielded the number of trips between each zone as shown in the table below.
Travel times between zones were also determined. Provide a trip distribution calculation using the
gravity model for one iteration. Assume Kij = 1. The following table shows the number of production
and attractions in each zone.

NOTE: During the calculation of the iteration, in each of the zones, round each FINAL trip (up/down)
to a whole number so that the total trips for each zone is EQUAL to the future productions for that
zone.

After completing a 1st iteration matrix, capture the following answers to black board:

• Total Trips from Zone 1 to Zone 2 [ANS1] Whole number only! No Spaces!!
• Total Trips from Zone 2 to Zone 2 [ANS2] Whole number only! No spaces!
• Total Trips from Zone 3 to Zone 2 [ANS3] Whole number only! No Spaces
• Total Trips from Zone 1 to Zone 1 [ANS4] Whole number only! No Spaces. NOT IN BB
• Total Trips from Zone 3 to Zone 3 [ANS5] Whole number only! No Spaces NOT IN BB
• TRUE or FALSE: After the second iteration, there is a less than 5% difference between given
and estimated attractions!

Trip Distribution 3

The amount of lumber produced and consumed by three states is shown in the following table.
Intrastate shipment distances are 320km and interstate distances are 1280km (between state 1 and
state 2), 1600km (between state 1 and state 3), and 400km (between state 2 and state 3). Assuming,
an impendence function of the form 1/d, estimate the tonnage of lumber that will travel between the
three states:

Tons of Lumber Produced and Consumed Per Year (metric tons)

State Lumber Produced Lumber Consumed
1 5334 889
2 2994 9072
3 8890 7257

NOTE: During the calculation of the iteration, in each of the zones, round each FINAL ‘trip’
(up/down) to a whole number so that the total ‘trips’ for each zone is EQUAL to the future
productions for that zone.

After completing a 1st iteration matrix, capture the following answers to black board:

• Total lumber travelled from Zone 1 to Zone 1 [ANS1] Whole number only! No Spaces!!
• Total lumber travelled from Zone 2 to Zone 2 [ANS2] Whole number only! No spaces!
• Total lumber travelled from Zone 3 to Zone 3 [ANS3] Whole number only! No Spaces
• TRUE or FALSE: After the first iteration, there is a less than 5% difference between given
and estimated attractions for zone 1!

Part 1) Determine the share (proportion) of person-trips by each of two modes (private auto and mass
transit) using the multinomial logit model and given the following information:

After completing your calculations, capture the following to black board:

a) the utility of travel in the zone by auto [ANS1], Two decimal places with sign, E.g. -8,20
b) the utility of travel in the zone by bus [ANS2], Two decimal places with sign, E.g. -6,20
c) the % of travel in the zone by auto [ANS3], answer as a decimal, two decimal places
d) the % of travel in the zone by bus [ANS4], answer as a decimal, two decimal places

Part 2) For the same problem, an increase in the price of fuel has changed the out-of-pocket costs for
the auto mode to $1,80. Recalculate the mode shares accordingly and explain what has happened
accordingly

For the same problem with an increase in the price of fuel….capture your answers as follows
e) the utility of travel in the zone by auto [ANS5], Two decimal places with sign, E.g. -8,20
f) the utility of travel in the zone by bus [ANS6], Two decimal places with sign, E.g. -6,20
g) the % of travel in the zone by auto [ANS7], answer as a decimal, two decimal places
h) the % of travel in the zone by bus [ANS8], answer as a decimal, two decimal places

Mode Choice 2

A mode choice logit model is to be developed based on the following information.

A survey of travellers in an area with bus service found the following data:

Model Parameter Auto Bus

X2, travel time (min.) 20 35
X3, parking time (min.) 5 0
X4, out-of-pocket cost (cents) 225 100
Ak, calibration constant -0.33 -0.27

Part 1) Using the Utility function: Uk = Ak - 0.10 X1 - 0.13 X2 - 0.12 X3 - 0.0045 X4; determine the
modal split.
After completing your calculations in, capture the following to black board:
a) the utility of travel in the zone by auto [ANS1], Two decimal places with sign, E.g. -8,20
b) the utility of travel in the zone by bus [ANS2], Two decimal places with sign, E.g. -6,20
c) the % of travel in the zone by auto [ANS3], answer as a decimal, two decimal places
d) the % of travel in the zone by bus [ANS4], answer as a decimal, two decimal places

Part 2) After implementing service improvements to the buses, the mode split changed to 81.6% private
auto use and 18.4% bus use. Determine a value for the calibration constant for the bus mode that reflects
this shift in mode split.
After completing your calculations in, capture the following to black board:
