The Equals Symbol

We are all familiar with the
equals symbol but can anyone
tell me what it actually means?

The equals symbol is one way of

comparing two quantities…

1+1=2
2

= means that the quantities

on each side are the same.

The Greater Than Symbol

We use the greater than symbol
to find the larger amount when
comparing two quantities that
are different.

Maths Teaching Resources

For example…

18 > 12
18 is greater than 12
Maths Teaching Resources
www.Teacher-of-Primary.co.uk

Think of the symbol as my

mouth. I always want to eat
the largest amount and so my
mouth is always open looking
at the biggest number!
