Unit2-Lession 1:

Situation 1:

Student A: Hey, Is it OK for a quick chat?

Student B: Yes, sure.
Student A: I have noticed a problem with this design. This coupling won’t work.
Student B: Really. What’s wrong with it?
Student A: I have inspected the machine and I found that the input and output
shafts are not in alignment. It looks like there’s a little bit of offset
Student B: What do you mean?
Student A: It means we can’t use a rigid coupling for this connection. It will
break
Student B: Oh, you’re right. Why not use a flexible coupling instead. What do you
recommend?
Student A : How about using a beam, it can allow for misalignment and offset.
Student B: That sounds good. Let’s use that.
Situation 2:

Student B: Hey, Is it OK for a quick chat?

Student A: Yes, sure.
Student B: I have noticed a problem in this design. This coupling won’t work.
Student A: Really? What’s wrong with it?
Student B: I have inspected the machine and I found that this coupling won’t work.
It’s too flexible.
Student A: What do you mean?
Student B: It means we can’t use a flexible coupling for this connection .It looks
like we need to align the shafts.
Student A: Oh, you are right. Why not use a rigid coupling instead. What do you
recommend?
Student B : How about using a sleeve-style coupling, it can hold shafts in perfect
alignment.
Student A: That sounds good. Let’s use that.
Unit 2-Lesson 2
A: John, can you give me a hand?
B: Sure, David. What can I do for you?
A: Would you mind going to the hardware store, please?
B: What do you need?
A: I need 5 thrust roller bearing and 2 straight roller bearing
B: I can do that but I am not sure about their features and functions? Could you
explain more, please?
A: OK. No problem. Thrust roller bearings use barrel-shaped rollers. They support
thrust motion. Tapered roller bearings use conical rollers to support radial forces
and moderate thrust forces.
B: Actually, there is another kind of bearings named journal bearings. Why not
purchase them?
A: Oh, I forgot it. Would you mind buying them, please? I also need for my CNC
machine. They have no rolling parts. The shaft rotates inside a lubricated sleeve
instead.
B: That’s good. When do you need them?
A: I need them by this afternoon.
B: I’ll buy them right now.
B. Unit 3
Unit3- Lession 1

A: How are the plans for the new transmission system?

B: Pretty good. But we still need to decide what gears to use for transmission 6D.

A: Okay. But I want to know the requirements for gears.

B: We need the gears that can reduce noise and vibration; also, they can reduce
speeds.
A: We should use worm and worm gears or helical gears because they can meet all
requirements.

B: Can you tell me the features of both types of gears?

A: About worm and worm gear, they have one continuous tooth, and quiet and
smooth meshing action. About helical gears, they are stronger than spur gears and
its teeth are cut in a spiral shape.

B: Well, I’d like to use helical gears because we need the gears that are stronger
than spur gears. How much is a pair of helical gears?

A: Hmm… It costs $40.

B: I think it’s reasonable. Let’s use helical gears.

A: Sounds like a plan.

Unit 3-Lession 2:
Situation 1:

A: Hi,... I’d like to order your company to manufacture chain drive for an electric
motor.
B: Yes, sure. First of all, Could you tell me about its functions?
A: Well, it is used transmit motion and power between successive chain with
sprocket special toothed wheels
B: What is it made of?
A: Well. It’s made of metal with a number of links. Could you tell me more
about the advantages of chain drive for an electric motor?
B: First, no slippage occurs in chain drive. Besides, the efficiency is high,
usually above 95% and it is usually not affected by atmospheric conditions
and temperature
A: Oh, I see. Does it have any disadvantages?
B: As I concerned, the operation of chain drive can cause noise and vibrations
A: Really. Could you please reduce these problems?
B: Sure, we’ll try our best.
A: That’s great
Situation 2:

B: Hi,... I’d like to order your company to manufacture belt drive for an electric
car.
A: Yes, sure. First of all, Could you tell me about its functions?
B: Well, it is used transmit motion and power from one shaft to another by
means of friction between belt and pulleys.
A: What is it made of?
B: Well. It’s made of rubber, plastic urethane, or other substances. Could you
tell me more about the advantages of belt drive for an electric motor?
A: First, the operation of belt drive can reduce noise and vibration. Besides,
slippage occurs in belt drive when load exceeds frictional force.
B: Oh, I see. Does it have any disadvantages?
A: As I concerned, efficiency of belt drive is comparatively low because of
frictional loss, and belt tension is affected by atmospheric conditions and
temperature.
B: Really. Could you please reduce these problems?
A: Sure, we’ll try our best.
B: That’s great
C. Unit 4
Lession 1

A: Good afternoon, Sir. Can we have a talk now?

B: Sure. What can I do for you?
A: Our design department is doing a project and we really need a new CAD
program because our current program doesn't work for some of our drafting
B: What are the limitations of the current program?
A: Its 2-D technical drawings are excellent. But the technology supports very
limited 3-D design. Also, it is not compatible with some types of files.
B: Do you have any new suggestions?
A: I recommends a program called Think Creator 3.0 unlike our current program
B: I see. What slse does the CAD program do?
A: It creates B-rep, manifold models and photorealistic renderings.
B: That’s impressive. What kind of file does it support?
A: It can read and create IGES and PDES files.
B: You convinced me. I’ll order it right away.
D. Unit 6

Situation 1:

B: Good morning Sir

A: Oh, good morning Mr.A. How are you doing?
B: Pretty good. Thanks. Well, can we discuss the type of plastic for the oil tank
project – the one we are working on right now?
A: Sure, Sir. What are your requirements?
B: You know, the oil tank needs to be resistant to chemical and heat
A: Ok. Anything else?
B: Let me see.. well it also needs to be ductile
A: I see. The oil tank might be broken during shipping, right?
B: so which type of plastic is suitable?
A: Based on your requirement, I think plastic type 6 might be a great choice.
However, it is not usually recycled due to high cost.
B: Ah, what about the cost?
A: You know, plastic type number 6 costs E2100/ton
B: Yes, I see ... Thank you for your help
A: No problems. Good bye... See you late
B: Take care
Situation 2:

B: Good morning Sir,

A: Oh, Good morning Mr A. How are you doing?

B: Pretty good. Thanks. Well, can we discuss the type of plastic for the food containers
project- The one we are working on right now?

A: Sure, Sir. What are your requirements?

B: You know, the food containers needs to be resistant to chemical, resistant to cold and
heat.

A: Ok. Anything else?

B: Let me see…It must not be too brittle. And the most important is It can be recyclable

A: How about the prices?

B: It has to be around 2068 euros a ton

B: So, Which type of plastic is suitable?

A: Based on your requirements. In my opinion High density polyethylene is a great

choice for you.

B: Yes I see…. Thank you for your help.

A: No problems. Good bye…See you late.

B: Take care.

E. Unit 7
B: Good morning, how’s the project going?
A: Good morning, pretty good. But we have some problems. Can you explain the
causes and give us solutions?
B: Ok, What’s wrong with this?
A: I think the first problem is ... But I don’t known why, can you tell me the main
causes of this matter?
B: From my point of view, it can be of ... reasons. The first is ... and the second
is ...
A: Oh, I see. How are we going to solve this problem?
B: First, I think ... Then, ... next ... Any other problems?
A: Yes, the second one is ...
