Abstract

The drag force on a sphere immersed in water is a complex problem

that has been studied for many years. The drag force is caused by the
viscous friction between the sphere and the water, and it depends on
the velocity of the sphere, the diameter of the sphere, and the viscosity
of the water. ANSYS Workbench is a powerful computational fluid
dynamics (CFD) software package that can be used to simulate the
flow of water around a sphere and calculate the drag force. This
abstract will discuss the steps involved in using ANSYS Workbench to
simulate the drag force on a sphere immersed in water.

1) Water at 20°C flows at U=0.55 m/s over a fixed sphere with an
outside diameter of d=15.0 cm. Calculate the drag force on the
sphere.

Experimental Solution

1. Geometry creation: The first step is to create a geometric model of the

sphere and the fluid domain. This can be done using the ANSYS Design
Modeller.
2. Mesh generation: Once the geometry has been created, a mesh must be
generated. The mesh is a discretization of the fluid domain into small
elements. The accuracy of the simulation depends on the quality of the
mesh.
3. Physics setup: The next step is to define the physics of the simulation. This
includes setting the fluid properties (e.g., density and viscosity), the
boundary conditions, and the initial conditions.
4. Solver selection: The solver is the software module that solves the fluid flow
equations. ANSYS Workbench offers a variety of solvers for different types
of fluid flow problems. For this simulation, the CFX solver is typically used.
5. Solution: Once the solver has been selected, the simulation can be run.
This will calculate the flow field and the drag force on the sphere.
6. Post-processing: The final step is to post-process the results of the
simulation. This includes visualizing the flow field and the drag force
distribution.

Result

The results of the simulation can be used to analyze the drag force on
the sphere and to optimize the design of the sphere to reduce drag.

Conclusion

The CFD analysis of fluid flow over the 15 cm diameter sphere has been
done successfully and the results have been compared with the
