Baroque (17th-18th Century)
Portuguese word barroco (Spanish barrueco), used to describe an irregular
or impertectly shaped pearl
In art criticism the word 'Baroque' came to be used to describe anything
irregular, bizarre, or otherwise departing from established rules and
proportions.
A period of artistic styles in exaggerated motion, drama, tension, and
grandeur. The Roman Catholic Church highly encouraged the Baroque style
to propagate Christianity
Era in arts that embraced painting, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts,
and music.

While bronze and marble were used as materials, Baroque art


was characterised by polychrome wood and stone in outdoor
sculptures. These statues were inspired by everyday life and the
religious imaginary

Architectures of Baroque period were made of both rough stones


and smooth stucco, and interior design denoted by luxuriant
fabrics and furniture.

Baroque Paintings

Most artists used canvases or panels that were toned dark brown
and even black. There are some great advantages to working
over a dark base layer which cannot be replicated by working on
a light ground. The greatest benefit to working on a dark canvas
is that it saves effort.

Some of the qualities most frequently associated with the
Baroque are grandeur, sensuous richness, drama, vitality,
movement, tension, emotional exuberance, and a tendency to
blur distinctions between the various arts. Therefore, many
artists focused on portraits, historical scenes, scenes of
everyday life

Bernini was an Italian artist and the first


Baroque artist.
He was arguably the greatest sculptor of the
17th century, known for having developed the
Baroque style of sculpture.
Bernini is also known for his outstanding
architectural works.

Michelangelo Merisi (Caravaggio)

He was better known as Caravaggio.


He was an outcast in his society, because of his
own actions and the lack of modesty and
reverence for religious subjects in his own
paintings.
Caravaggio's models at this period were either
himself or young persons who have an air of
being promising but wicked.

Peter Paul Rubens

Rubens was well known for his paintings of


mythical and figurative subjects, landscapes,
portraits, and Counter-Reformation altarpieces.

His commissioned works were mostly religious


subjects, history paintings of magical creatures,
and hunt scenes.

FASHION OF PEOPLE DURING THE
BAROQUE PERIOD
During the early Baroque, women wore long gowns
with a low neckline, lace collars for decoration,
and virago sleeves.
Elaborate patterns and dark colors were popular.
Men's clothing had a militaristic look with outfits
consisting of a doublet worn over an undershirt,
loose breeches, and boots up to the knee.
