BAROQUE

Yago López Machicado 3ºAA

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS
reformers

It took place between 1600 and 1740 in Europe (started in Italy), and was a
new style for art, mostly for music, dance, painting, architecture and sculpture. This
style was a reflection of the political and cultural changes of the time (Protestant
and Counter reformation) and was associated with the cultural movement between
the Church and the followers of the Reformation. Church authorities used religious
artwork to display Catholic theological dogma while reformers supported
decorative artwork.
Baroque artists were particularly focused on natural forms, spaces, colors,
lights, and the contrast between light and darkness, and wanted to create emotion
through their artwork in dramatic ways.

PAINTING
Darkness in the background

Paintors, wanted to be recognised in a different group from

the renaissance´s artists. They used warm and intense colours, as
well as primary colours. To remark the most important part of
their paintings, they used the contrast between light and dark,
(lightened parts were the most important) , and unlike in the
renaissance art, in the baroque picture, faces expressed
emotions, and were asymmetric.

SCULPTURE 1/2

Baroque sculptors felt free to create what they minds

thinked . They even combined different materials in a single
artwork, and sometimes, tried replicating one material using
another.
A famous sculptor was Lorenzo Bernini He spent
almost his entire career in Rome and was responsible for
some of the greatest sculptures of the 17th century. He was
considered a worthy successor of Michelangelo
SCULPTURE 2/2

The distinctive features of baroque statues are the use of

more than one block of marble, for allowing a large array of
gestures, the treatment of drapery, the use of
variegated/colored marble or of different marbles, and a
torsion of a very often tall and slim body. They often seem
to be spilling out of their assigned niches or floating upward
toward heaven

ARCHITECTURE

Baroque Architecture was a more theatrical version of

Renaissance architecture, with
dramatic lighting and colour, illusory effects such
as`` trompe l’oeil´´, and designs that played games
with architectural features, sometimes leaving them
incomplete.
It´s buildings included a main central tower with a
big dome to let light pass, and symbolised the union
between the heavens and the Earth
ARTISTIC TRASCENDENCE

After the second half of the 18º century, baroque was transformed into
Rococo, that used a lot of concepts from Baroque but also increased the
elaboration of the artworks. New musical pieces were created in the Baroque, as
concerto, sonata and opera, that still remain today. The Reformation and the
Counter Reformation, were developed in that time, and would change the
thoughts of the people.
