Solving Systems of Non-Linear Equations
A system of non-linear equations is a system consisting of at
least one nonlinear equation. To solve for a system of nonlinear
equations, we may always use substitution method while elimination
method can be used only when a variable has the same power in each
of the equations.
A system with no solution is called an inconsistent system while
one with infinitely many solutions is called a dependent system. The
solution to a system can be viewed as the intersection of the graphs of
the equations involved.

𝟒𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑𝒚𝟐 = 𝟒𝟖
𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟒

𝒚𝟐 = −𝟑𝟐

We call a system of this type,

inconsistent system.

No real solutions can be obtained since

the graphs of the two original
equations do not intersect at all.
𝟐𝒙𝟐 − 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟒
𝟖𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒚𝟐 = 𝟏𝟔

𝒙, 𝒚 ȁ𝒚 = ± 𝟐𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒

We call a system of this type,

dependent system.

Specific solutions may be obtained by

specifying values for x and solving for
the corresponding values of y, using
one of the equations.
