1. Explain in essay format the word “Baroque Architecture.” Who encouraged

the “Baroque Style” and why.

Baroque Architecture was once first originated in the 16th century

subsequently to the Renaissance Architecture, it is also mainly used in planning

cathedrals and churches around the European Countries. Representing grandeur

styles and details and adding the curvaceous plan. This idea came to mind when

architects during the Renaissance era has somehow used to symmetry, hence

why not add curvature to it and the asymmetry to the plan. During the Baroque

period, Architects was more of the expressive to their works and it was vast and

highly detailed.

Annibale Carracci and Caravaggio, the two Italian painters who decisively broke

with Mannerism in the 1590s and thus helped usher in the Baroque style, painted,

respectively, in classicist and realist modes. The greatest of the Baroque sculptor-

architects was Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who designed both the baldachin with spiral

columns above the altar of St. Peter’s in Rome and the vast colonnade fronting

that church. Baroque architecture as developed by Bernini, Carlo Maderno,

Francesco Borromini, and Guarino Guarini emphasized massiveness and

monumentality, movement, dramatic spatial and lighting sequences, and a rich

interior decoration using contrasting surface textures, vivid colours, and luxurious

materials to heighten the structure’s physical immediacy and evoke sensual

delight.

2. What is Baroque Renaissance and describe its features and characteristics.

It had its origins in the Counter-Reformation, when the Catholic Church

launched an overtly emotional and sensory appeal to the faithful through art and

architecture.

Complex architectural plan shapes, often based on the oval, and the dynamic

opposition and interpenetration of spaces were favoured to heighten the feeling of

motion and sensuality. Other characteristic qualities include grandeur, drama and

contrast (especially in lighting), curvaceousness, and an often dizzying array of

rich surface treatments, twisting elements, and gilded statuary.
