ASSIGNMENT TOPIC 5: From theory to practice: To Code Switch or Not to Code
Switch?
As you watch the video, answer these questions, post them in a Word document:
1. Which of the following is NOT an example of code-switching? (Explain)
a. leaving the house in baggy pants and an oversized T-shirt and then changing into
skinny jeans and a tight shirt once you're in a new city
b. using one language at home and a different language at school
c. writing in the language you are most fluent in
d. using language that is specific to a particular region, such as "y'all"

From my point of view, I think I will choose the letter B because the exponent explains
that more than all the code change comes from clothing, because of the desire to fit into
this new environment.

2. Which of the following is the MOST LIKELY reason a person might code-switch?
(Explain)
a. because they cannot pick up social cues.
b. to make themselves stand out in a group setting.
c. because they speak too many languages.
d. to survive the situation they are in.

The correct answer is the letter D, since Katelynn sometimes had to put away her sling
and use her great lexicon to survive the environment and adapt.

3. What is the purpose of Katelynn Duggins's TED Talk? Use at least two examples from
the video to support your analysis.
The purpose of the talk is to make us understand the change of code and what this means
for people when they change their environment and he represents it with 2 examples that
of former President Obama because when he gave a conference in a formal suit he knew
that he would already achieve it that he had a formal attitude because that is what is
warranted and then we have a former president Obama when he lived in the white house
and players went, he was seen wearing more comfortable clothes and that is where we
realize that he felt like one of the citizens it was the change of behavior to adapt to
situations. We have these 2 examples of former President Obama where he explains that
there should be a change of code depending on the environment that surrounds you
because not only you should feel comfortable but also the people around you.

4. What does Duggins think about code-switching? Does she think that people should
code-switch? Why or why not? What evidence does she use to support her position?
