What is the most
common and perhaps the
most sought after
qualification when
companies hire
additional employees?
WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?
A.It originated from the Latin word “communicare”
which means “to share.”

B. It is the imparting, conveying or exchange of ideas,

knowledge and information… (Oxford English
Dictionary)
C. The process by which people interactively create,

through human symbolic interaction (Seiler & Beall,

What do you notice
about the given
definitions?
All of them defined communication as some sort of a
process involving communicators, a message /
meaning, an interaction and a medium or way.
The goal of communication is understanding or to
arrive at an understanding.
SCENARIO:
You want to ask for additional allowance money from
your Mom.
● How would you go about it?
● How would you ensure success?
Communication involves communicators, a message,
meaning, an interaction and a medium.
Did you see these in the illustration earlier? Could
you identify them?

TASK 1 Directions: Draw a happy face before
each situation showing that an effective
communication has taken place.
1. Dings’ mom asked him to buy a pack of ice cubes.
Upon coming back from the store, he handed a box
of Knorr cubes to his mom.
2. Stacy wanted to watch a horror movie, so she
invited her friend to come over so they could watch
one together. She then borrowed a horror movie from
her cousin. On the day of movie watching, she found
out that her cousin lent her a comedy film.
COMMUNICATION:
ITS PROCESSES & ELEMENTS
In real life contexts, the entire communication process
takes up little time for run-of-the-mill situations like
asking permission to go out of the house to buy or do
something.
In other situations though, like a group preparing for a
report or producing a project, the communication
process will take a bit longer and will end once the
desired outcome is achieved.

KEY PRINCIPLES OF
COMMUNICATION
COMMUNICATION IS UNAVOIDABLE.

No one goes through life without having

engaged in the act of communicating.
You need to communicate in order to get things
done.
You do not need to personally like a co-worker
to be able to talk with that co-worker.
COMMUNICATION IS STRATEGIC.

We communicate with specific goals

or outcomes in mind.
➢ Instrumental
➢ Relational
➢ Identity management
INSTRUMENTAL COMMUNICATION

Talking with someone with the goal

of accomplishing a task or getting an
outcome using communication as a
means.
RELATIONAL COMMUNICATION

Communication aimed at building

relationships with others is relational
in nature.
Having a positive social relationship
at work is instrumental in getting
things done efficiently.
IDENTITY MANAGEMENT

What you say, how you say it, and

how you treat others are ways of
presenting yourself to the world.
If you want people to have a positive
regard for you, you need to treat
people right.
COMMUNICATION IS IRREVERSIBLE.

More often than not, we say or do

things without realizing the impact
of our words or actions can have on
others.
What we say or do stays in the minds
of the people who receive them.
COMMUNICATION IS A PROCESS.

Recall how the source encodes the

message he wants to convey and
how the receiver decodes the same
message he has received to be able to
give appropriate and relevant
feedback.
COMMUNICATION IS NOT A PANACEA.

While communication can improve

situations and relationships, it is not
a panacea or a remedy for all ills.
ETHICAL COMMUNICATION
Ethics are a set of moral principles that guide us as we
go through life.

It is important that we observe ethics in the way we

communicate.
ETHICS IN COMMUNICATION
(D.D. Johnston, 1994)
MUTUALITY
Remember that others have needs
too.
In communication, this need is our
need to be heard.
INDIVIDUAL DIGNITY
Words can cut deep!
Whenever you communicate, you
need to be very careful with the
words you are using to avoid
embarrassing another person.
ACCURACY & ACCESS TO
INFORMATION
Correct information is very
important if one is to make a
decision.
Top level management will always
be privy to certain sensitive
information than other employees.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Be responsible and accountable for
everything that you will say.
AUDIENCE
A good rule of thumb is the “200%
rule” where both the sender and
receiver have full or 100%
responsibility to ensure that the
message is understood and that
ethics are followed.
RELATIVE TRUTH
As either sender or receiver of
information, remember that your
point of view may not be shared by
others and that your conclusions are
relative to your perspective, so allow
others to respectfully disagree.
ENDS VS MEANS
Be sure that the end goal of your
communication and the means of
getting to that end are both ethical
although no rule can be applied
without reservation to any situation.
USE OF POWER
In situations where you have more
power than others, you also have
more responsibility for the outcome.
RIGHTS VS. RESPONSIBILITIES
Balance your rights against your
responsibilities even if you live in a
wonderful society where your rights
are protected by law; not everything
you have a right to do is ethical.
