BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Glue is widely used worldwide in case of emergency and in simple works. Glues
are part of a larger family called adhesives. It refers to any adhesive that is made
from variety of substances which is used for binding and sticking objects together.
Ancient humans have the ability to create useful products with the used materials
from nature. These product helped the early humans to things that is essential for
their survival. Early glues were made of collagen harvested from animals .Muscle,
bones, sinew and other tissues release collagen when boiled. The collagen released
is sticky when wet but dries into hard and water-insoluble substance afterwards
(Loeschen, 2019).The first known adhesive was comprised of tar from birch bark,
which early humans used to bind tools to wooden handles around 200,000 years ago
( Breyer, 2020).
Nowadays many products marketed as glue are in fact synthetic adhesives which
contains water, ethanol, acetone, Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) to come up with an
appropriate texture and other substances. (Loeschen, 2019). According to
Encyclopedia brittanica Polyvinyl Acetate is a synthetic resin prepared by the
polymerization of vinyl acetate . As reported by Agency for Toxic Substances &
Diseade Registry, people were exposed to vinyl acetate in air for a short periods
caused irritation of eyes, nose and throat. Due to this, the researchers come up with
a study of glue using Aloe Vera which is more organic and safer.
Aloe vera is scientifically named aloe barbadenisis Mill., family liliaceae. It is a
succulent and medicinal plants that is used to treat various health conditions for
thousands of years ( Cronkleton, 2018). It is widely used and distributed in the
production of Food, cosmetics, food supplements and herbal medicines throughout
the world. Aloe Vera is much bigger and is rarely found in the Philippines in the
medicinal and cosmetic applications. In terms of cultural management, the aloe vera
plant adapts to the climate conditions in the Philippines. A sandy or gravelly soil with
very good drainage can give a successful to the plant( Garde, 2015). Aloe Vera
contains two major liquid sources, yellow latex (exudates) and the clear
gel( mucilage). The clear gel of the aloe vera or the mucilage is a sticky gelatinous
substance used espicially as an adhesive.
