The Objective of the Lesson: Students will be able to use the form “used to” to express past habits.

The Procedure

Warm Up: AIM: To introduce the use of the semi-modal “used to”
Teacher divides the board into 02 sides.

1st side: 1990s 2nd side: NOW

The teacher explains that Mark has become a rich man because he won a lot of money, and
starts comparing his life between past and present.

Then, She presents the new structure “used to” by writing 2 or 3 examples on the board.
Then she discusses the forms (affirmative, negative, interrogative) with her students.

Meaning: we use “used to” to talk about habitual or regular actions or states in the past that
are now finished.
E.g. I used to have a dog. (I had a dog in the past but I don’t have a dog now)
Did you use to play football when you were at school?
I didn’t use to like action movies, but I love them now.

Activity One: AIM: to consolidate learners’ use of the semi-modal “used to”

Match the pairs so as to construct meaningful sentences.

I used to eat a lot of chocolate but now I eat a lot

Paul used to work in London but now he drives

He used to take the train to work now he works in Sheffield

Activity Two: Aim: to focus on the form “used to” by making sentences.

Make sentences about past and present habits and situations:


Example: John / rugby / tennis – John used to play tennis. Now he plays rugby.

Activity Three: Aim: to practice making sentences using “used to” and its negative form

Write sentences about people hundreds of years ago.

Activity Five: Aim: to revise asking question including “used to”
