1. TYPES OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FOR HOLING ACTIVITIES

- tractor-powered or portable auger

- heavy tractor equipped with suitable tracks, or with an excavator using pressure
from the bucket to consolidate the peat
- a hydraulic excavator

2. HOLING METHOD AND SIZE

Planting hole to be dug mechanically where possible post-hole digger or by manually.

Planting holes of 60 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm dimension should be dug with a 46 cm Auger.
Holes should be dug in 15 cm deeper than height of the polybag so as to assist initial
root penetration.

On suitable terrain, holes are sometimes made using a tractor-powered or portable

auger. This method should not be used in heavy clay soils since the revolving action of
the digger can cause the side of the hole to become sealed, or gleyed, leading to
restrict early root development.

On the other hand, impressive results have been obtained on terraces where large
holes dug by an excavator in the sub-soil at the terrace back were refilled and
consolidated with topsoil and litter scraped from above the terrace. A smaller hole to fit
the seedling root mass was dug in the center of the original hole at planting time.

A large planting hole technique has also been proposed for non-terraced areas of
poorer soil. A platform, 3.6 x 3.4 m is first constructed, with the topsoil heaped beside
the platform. A 1.3 x 1.3 x 1.3 m planting hole is then dug in the centre of the platform.
The hole is then filled with the earlier excavated topsoil. There can also be addition of
dried palm oil mill effluent prior to adding the topsoil.

Planting on peat soils raises problems because the soil has a very low bulk density and
drainage will lead to soil shrinkage, thus causing root exposure and the palms to lean
and fall. To reduce this problem, the planting rows are often compacted before planting.
This is achieved by running up and down the planting rows with Mukaa / heavy

consolidate the peat, especially around the planting point. A hole, about 1 m diameter
and 0.3 m deep is first dug at the planting point. The palm is then planted in a normal
size hole in the center of a larger hole. This method allows for peat shrinkage, whilst
simultaneously permitting the aerial parts to develop freely.

An alternate method is by using a tool fitted to a hydraulic excavator that enables it to

press out a 1.4 m square and 0.3 deep sloping-sided depression. In the center, a hole,
0.3 m diameter by 0.5 m deep, is punched at the same time, thus further consolidating
the material around the planting point and planting hole.
