1. TYPES OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FOR HOLING ACTIVITIES
On the other hand, impressive results have been obtained on terraces where large
holes dug by an excavator in the sub-soil at the terrace back were refilled and
consolidated with topsoil and litter scraped from above the terrace. A smaller hole to fit
the seedling root mass was dug in the center of the original hole at planting time.
A large planting hole technique has also been proposed for non-terraced areas of
poorer soil. A platform, 3.6 x 3.4 m is first constructed, with the topsoil heaped beside
the platform. A 1.3 x 1.3 x 1.3 m planting hole is then dug in the centre of the platform.
The hole is then filled with the earlier excavated topsoil. There can also be addition of
dried palm oil mill effluent prior to adding the topsoil.
Planting on peat soils raises problems because the soil has a very low bulk density and
drainage will lead to soil shrinkage, thus causing root exposure and the palms to lean
and fall. To reduce this problem, the planting rows are often compacted before planting.
This is achieved by running up and down the planting rows with Mukaa / heavy

consolidate the peat, especially around the planting point. A hole, about 1 m diameter
and 0.3 m deep is first dug at the planting point. The palm is then planted in a normal
size hole in the center of a larger hole. This method allows for peat shrinkage, whilst
simultaneously permitting the aerial parts to develop freely.
