Density of Liquids and Gases

Learning Objectives:

Describe a method
that can be used to
determine the volume
and the density of
liquids and gases.

Starter:
What is the volume of the liquid shown
on the diagram?
DENSITY OF A LIQUID
■ Method:
■ Find the Mass of an empty Measuring Cylinder.
■ Add a certain Volume of Liquid.
45.0 g
■ Find the Mass of the Measuring Cylinder and Liquid
25.0 g ■ Calculate the Mass of Liquid.
■ Calculate Density of Liquid.
Mass of Liquid = Mass of Measuring Cylinder and Liquid – Mass of empty Measuring cylinder

20.0 cm3 ■
D = m = 20 =1.00 g/cm3
V 20
45 – 25 = 20 g
DENSITY OF A GAS
■ Remove the air from a flask
To vacuum flask of a known Volume, using a
vacuum pump.
■ Find its Mass.
■ Add the gas to be tested.
150.0 g
■ Reweigh.
3
1000 cm 170.0 g ■ The difference is the Mass
of gas.
170 -150 = 20.0g ■ Calculate Density.
D = m = 20 =0.0200 g/cm3
V 1000
Revision questions
■ 1.a measuring cylinder contains 120cm3 of
water. A small piece of rock of mass 180g
is placed in the water and the water level
rises.
■ a) The new level of water is 145cm3.What
is the volume of the rock?
■ b)What is the density of the rock?
■ 2.A block of concrete is 2.5m long, 1.8m
wide and 0.9m high.
■ a)what is the volume of the block?
■ b)The density of concrete is
6500kg/m3.What is the mass of the
concrete block?
