Paint System:
Finishing Coat First Coat
One or more layers
of paint is called a
paint system. It

Steel Surface
gives corrosion
Protection.

Mid Coats
A Paint system may contain following coats:
1. 1st Coat (Primer): It protects the surface
(substrate) from corrosion and provides good adhesion to
the surface for the next paint layer.

2. Mid Coats: Mid Coats act as a barrier to prevent the

passage of Water.

3. Finishing Coats: Finishing coat (or coats) Give

final appearance (aesthetics), degree of gloss & colour.
Resistance to abrasion, UV rays, Weather etc.

Some Important Points:
• A single layer of fusion bonded epoxy or urethane would
give excellent protection employing the barrier principle.

• A zinc phosphate pigmented primer would be a

passivation system but would need further protection in
the form of a barrier system to protect it.

• An organic zinc rich epoxy would provide galvanic

protection through bimetallic principles but would last
longer with a barrier system to protect the zinc.
Q1. Second Coat also known as?

Primer
 A primer works better when in direct contact with the substrate.

 Provides excellent adhesion and also provides a key for any subsequent layer.

 Resist rust

 Older versions of BG specifications required that all primers should be brush applied.

 Primers for non-ferrous substrates:

 Zinc – Wash or Mordant primers
 Aluminium – PVB etch primers (15 – 25 µm)

 Acid Used (in Mordant & PVB etch Primers) – Phosphoric Acid

MID COATS
 One or more than one layer of mid coats can
be applied.

 Barrier Coats

 Prevent water from passing into the film.

Moisture tolerant systems

Website: www.weldingandndt.com
YouTube: www.youtube.com/weldingandndt
 In above ground pipes (an AGI, Above Ground Installation) the gas temperature is
very less than the ambient temperature and hence condensation forms on the
pipes.

 For repainting (during maintenance) either the gas stream can be diverted to
another route, or special materials (tolerant of the situation ) can be used.

 The BG National Grid specifications permits the use of tolerant materials

(moisture curing polyurethane or a high solid epoxy) as per Section SPA4 in
paragraph 10.

 Following three definitions apply when referring to quantity of water present.

• Damp – Paint can be applied
• Moist – Paint can be applied
• Wet – Paint can not be applied. Excess water to be removed
