Community Service Learning Journal

Community service plays a vital role in fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy
within individuals. Engaging in activities that contribute to the well-being of others not only
benefits the community but also enriches the lives of those involved. This semester, me and my
husband chose to serve our community by participating in the “Walk for Water” event hosted by
Water Mission. Water Mission is a nonprofit organization that focuses on providing safe water
solutions to communities in need around the world. Water Mission collaborates with local
partners and communities to implement custom water projects and install water purification
systems and promote hygiene education. The Walk for Water event symbolizes the daily struggle
faced by millions of people around the world who lack access to clean water. For this event, we
walked a total of 3.5 miles while carrying a bucket of water in order to symbolize the difficulties
endured by those who have to walk long distances for water each day.
Before participating in this event, I had very little knowledge of the reasoning behind this
cause. I knew that it was some kind of walk to raise awareness, but did not understand what
exactly the money was being raised for. My husband volunteered with me and we saw some
friends along the way at this event. We started at our local minor league baseball stadium, and
about 300 of us began the 3.5 mile walk with an empty bucket. At the halfway point we filled up
the bucket with dirty water and then carried it back to the stadium where the water was poured
into one of Water Mission’s water purification systems. This was a great reminder to be thankful
for basic things such as clean water, which is something I think a lot of us probably take for
granted. In the pictures below you will see the different aspects of Walk for Water 2023.

The walk was about 3.5 miles.

This experience raised awareness about broader social and environmental issues
throughout the world. By participating in community service events like this, I believe that it
helps us to remember that it is not all about us, and that there are things we can do for the
betterment of others around us.
