Subject: Design of Machine Elements (DME) Code: 102601
Time: 2 Hours Total Marks: 20

Answer any four questions in which question no. 1 is mandatory. There are no negative
marks.
1. Choose the Correct Answer: [5]
i. Which of the following loading is considered for the design of axles?
(a) Bending moment only
(b) Twisting moment only
(c) Combined bending moment and torsion
(d) Combined action of bending moment, twisting moment and axial thrust

ii. When a shaft is subjected to a bending moment M and a twisting moment T, then the
equivalent twisting moment is equal to
(a) M + T (b) M 2 + T 2
(c) 2M + T2 (d) M2 – T 2

iii. Two shafts will have equal strength, if

(a) diameter of both the shafts is same
(b) angle of twist of both the shafts is same
(c) material of both the shafts is same
(d) twisting moment of both the shafts is same

iv. The standard length of the shaft is

(a) 5 m (b) 6 m
(c) 7 m (d) all of these

v. A bolt of M 24 × 2 means that

(a) the pitch of the thread is 24 mm and depth is 2 mm
(b) the cross-sectional area of the threads is 24 mm2
(c) the nominal diameter of bolt is 24 mm and the pitch is 2 mm
(d) the effective diameter of the bolt is 24 mm and there are two threads per cm

2. A welded joint as shown in figure, is subjected to an eccentric

load of 2 kN. Find the size of weld, if the maximum shear stress
in the weld is 25 MPa. [5]
3. A circular shaft, ‘d’ in diameter, is welded to the support by means of circumferential
fillet weld. It is subjected to torsional moment of ‘T’.
Determine the size of the weld, if the permissible shear stress in the weld is limited to ‘’.
[5]

4. Find the efficiency of the following riveted joints:

1. Single riveted lap joint of 6 mm plates with 20 mm diameter rivets having a pitch of 50
mm.
2. Double riveted lap joint of 6 mm plates with 20 mm diameter rivets having a pitch of 65
mm.
Assume
Permissible tensile stress in plate = 120 MPa
Permissible shearing stress in rivets = 90 MPa
Permissible crushing stress in rivets = 180 MPa
[5]

5. An eccentrically loaded lap riveted joint is to be designed for a steel bracket as shown
in figure.
The bracket plate is 25 mm thick. All rivets are to be of the same size. Load on the bracket, P
= 50 kN ; rivet spacing, C = 100 mm; load arm, e = 400 mm.

Permissible shear stress is 65 MPa and crushing stress is 120 MPa. Determine the size of the
rivets to be used for the joint.
