Course Outcome : Assembling/disassembling electronic product.

Introduction:
This module contains information and suggested learning activities on Electronic Product
Assembly and Servicing NC2. It includes training materials and activities for you to accomplish and
complete.

Completion of this module will help you better understand the succeeding module on the
Circuit Design and Layout.

This module consists of 4 learning outcomes. Each learning outcome contains learning
activities supported by instruction sheets. Before you perform the instructions, read the information
sheets and answer the self-check and activities provided to certain as to yourself and your instructor
that you have acquired the knowledge necessary to perform the skill portion f the particular learning
outcome.

Upon completion of this module, report to your instructor for assessment to check your
achievement of knowledge and skills requirement of this module. If you pass the assessment, you
will be given a Certificate of Completion.

SUMMARY OF LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of the module the trainees/ students should be able to:
ILO3.1 Discuss the significance of PCB and its function.
ILO3.2 Simulate PCB Software Applications.
ILO3.3 Design circuit on a PCB.
ILO3.4 Troubleshooting the possible cause of the circuit on the PCB to malfunction.

If you are into electronics, PCBs are some of the most common things you
will see. These boards make our lives easier by eliminating all those
connecting wires and breadboards. If properly designed, it will reduce the
size of your device and can look very sexy.

What is a circuit board?

A printed circuit board (PCB) mechanically supports and electrically
connects electronic components using conductive tracks, pads, and other
features etched from copper sheets laminated onto a non-conductive
substrate. A printed circuit board has pre-designed copper tracks on a
conducting sheet. The pre-defined tracks reduce the wiring, thereby
reducing the faults arising due to loose connections. One simply needs to
place the components on the PCB and solder them.

In this module, I will show you how you can make circuit boards at home
easily. Doing so will save you a lot of time from debugging and double
checking the connections on a breadboard. So, sit back and see how it’s
done!

What are the different ways to make a Circuit Board?

There are in all four basic methods to make a PCB:

1. Iron on Glossy paper method.

2. Circuit by hand on PCB.
3. Printing circuit in sticker paper.
4. Laser cutting edge etching.
Since laser method is the industrial method to make PCBs, we will go into
detail for the first two methods.

PCB Design:

PCB design is usually done by converting your circuit’s schematic

diagram into a PCB layout using PCB layout software. There are many
cool open source software packages for PCB layout creation and design.

Some are listed here to give you a head-start:

1. Autodesk Eagle
2. PCBWizard

What Materials are Required to Make a Circuit Board?

Circuit components
1. 1pc - 555 Timer Circuit
2. 1pc - 555 Timer Circuit socket
3. 1pc - PCB Copper Plain
4. 3pcs - 1k ohm resistor
5. 1pc - 10k ohms resistor
6. 1pc - 10uF Electrolytic capacitor
7. 1pc -0.01uF Ceramic Capacitor
8. 2pcs - LED (Any color)
9. 1pc -Ferric Chloride 50ml (Etching Solution)*Can be shared by 6people*
10. Masking Tape or Sticker Paper Matt Type *Can be shared by 6people*
11. 1meter Soldering Lead

Procedure:
STEP 1: Prepare all the materials.

Materials:
- Etching Solution (Ferric Chloride)
- PCB Board
- Fine Tipped Marker
- Ruler (optional)
- Magazine Paper / Glossy Paper
- Plastic Tweezers / Plastic Straws
- Small Piece of Cloth
- Sanding Paper
- Plastic container

Step 2: Making Your Circuit Board Design

If you already have a PCB layout then there's no problem you can just skip this step and go to
the other one, you might as well write your design directly on the board using a permanent maker, if
you don't have plans doing the printing method. Before you make your own customizes PCB board
you should first design your own PCB layout. You can can make your own PCB layout by using a
decent PCB designing software like PCB Wizard.

Step 3: Printing Your PCB Layout

When you print your layout you can use any Printer or a Photocopying Machine and print it
out using your sticker paper. Since we don’t have any Laser printer let use you the third method.

Summary:
What Paper Should I Use:
- Sticker Paper

What Printer Should I Use?

- Printer

Step 4: Cutting the white line part

After you put the sticker paper on the PCB, using any cutter cut all the white part that you what
to etch or dissolve the copper clad.

Step 5: Etching The PCB Board

There are different variety of etching solution but the most common is Ferric Chloride. Get a
plastic container, never use any kind of metal container. Pour the etching solution on your plastic
container. Leave the PCB board for about 30-45 minutes in the container. After for about 30-45
minutes remove it from the container, leaving it for a long time will etch the ink protected area so
please remove it when it's done. You can slowly shake the container to make the etching process
faster. (The photo is just an example)

Step 6: Rinsing The Board

Rinse the PCB board with tap water, after etching it in the solution. Be sure to wear glover when
cleaning it. It is advised to use plastic tweezers, please do not use metallic materials like pliers or
your tool will end up like mine's, its rusty. (The photo is just an example)

Step 7: Removing The Sticker Paper

First you should brush the remaining sticker paper with laundry soap after etching the board to
expose the copper part of the board, or you could clean it with a small piece of sanding paper (fine)
while give it its shiny finish.

Step 8: Drilling The Holes

Drill the board with a mini drill a dremel tool will do. After drilling it rinse it again with water.
Be sure to drill it on the copper side, since the copper layout will be your guide
where to drill.

Step 9: Soldering
Before you solder make sure to clean the copper clad and your done. You will just have to test if
your soldered circuit is working.
