Geographical Information Systems Task

Due Date: August; September

Statistics South Africa strives to improve the lives of South Africans

through structured, transparent, and reliable data ecosystems. In
transforming the production, coordination, and use of statistics they
aim to educate all: from locals to local businesses, data allows
everyone to make effective decisions greatly impacting the lives of
people or success of businesses.

Learning Objectives

Information Technology [Due Date: 28th August]

You are an IT Intern at Lettuce Solutions designing a solution for

Statistics South Africa concerning the collection and interpretation of
population data. You are required to consult a Demographer Intern to
understand the requirements of your solution.

You have been tasked with creating a solution that will analyse
demographic data for the provinces of South Africa. The algorithm
for the solution (See below) and expected output has been provided
(Appendix: Expected Output).

1. For Each of South Africa’s Provinces (3)

1.1. Capture information critical to your solution (5)

1.2. Determine the Population Density and GDP/Capita (5)
1.3. Reformat the results to two decimal places (2)
1.4. Categorize the current province by Population Density
1.5. If the province is considered Densely populated (2)
1.5.1. Capture the population of the current province
in 2017 (1)
1.5.2. Determine the Population Growth (2)

1.6. Display the Population Density and GDP/Capita (1)

1.7. If the province is moderately populated (1)
1.7.1. Display the Population Growth (1)

2
You will also need to justify your solution by drafting a research
proposal (No longer than a page) on the variety of contexts in which
GIS is used within South Africa. At least 3 different contexts must be
explored and a conclusion on the value of GIS within South Africa
must be included. Refer to Concept Breakdown for details.

Geography [Due Date: 4th September]

You are a Demographer Intern at Statistics South Africa, and you

have been assigned a task where you need to collect information
about population distribution and wealth distribution in South Africa
and provide it to an IT Intern working at Lettuce Solutions to create a
solution that will calculate the required statistics. In the solution users
will enter the total number of people and the area in which those
people. The calculator will evaluate and display the population
density. The users can also calculate GDP Per capita for each
province in South Africa.

Question 1
Step 1:
Design a table showing populations and the area in square kilometer,
for the year 2010 and 2020 for the following provinces in South
Africa. (Reference your data) (15)
 Gauteng
 Western Cape
 Kwa Zulu Natal
 Free state
 Mpumalanga

3
Step 2:
Design a pie chart showing the Gross domestic product of the above-
mentioned provinces. (5)

Step: 3
Now you have been assigned an IT intern from a Lettuce Solutions,
that will design the solution. You need to provide them with above
collected information.
 Explain in detail what is population distribution and density.
 Briefly discuss factors that affect population distribution and
density.
 Also explain Gross Domestic Product.
 Show them how to calculate population density and GDP Per
capita

Concept Breakdown

Refer to the Rubric (Appendix: Rubric).

1. Solution Development
1.1. Implements Algorithm Accurately
- Student has translated the algorithm given into a working
Java solution.

1.2. Effective Variable Declaration

- Student has created only necessary variables. Variable
naming is clear.

1.3. Accurate UI Elements

- Student has matched the Design of the User interface to
what was expected.

1.4. Use of Comments

- Student has made use of comments to explain their code.

2. Research Proposal
2.1. Style of Writing
- Formal, fluent and accurate throughout.

2.2. Structure
- Clear introduction, body and conclusion. A maximum of 3
contexts have been explored in-depth. Conclusion on the
value of GIS within South Africa is well-thought and
constructed.

2.3. Referencing
- Accurate and relevant evidence used. Harvard referencing
is present.
