1. What made Delia Delight Rice establish a school in the Philippines?

I learned that there are people who really have an influence in the development
of education for learners with disabilities here in the Philippines. One of the influential
people is Delia Delight Rice, a missionary and a teacher, wherein she is one of the
pivotal people in developing the school for deaf and blind or the SDB. One of her main
reasons is her family because Delia Delight Rice came from a family of deaf and it
motivates her to help other people who have the same disability. Aside from that,
Philippines at time was one her place of missionary and it is one of her motives why she
chose to established school here in the Philippines.

2. Cite legal bases in strengthening the schools for PWD in the Philippines.
One of the legal bases in strengthening the schools for PWD in the Philippines is
the DECS Order No. 117 s. 1987. Specified in this order, as its name suggests, the
policies and guidelines required in establishing SPED Centers and SPED Programs, in
aim of providing quality education to exceptional children. These general principles were
developed as a result of series of consultative conferences.
Aside from that, R.A 7277 is an act that helps to strengthen the education for
SPED because it indicates in the act that schools should welcome the people with
disabilities openly and without discrimination from the community.

3. Describe the classroom for children with special needs.

The administrative organization of special education should be fully committed in
providing and maintaining appropriate environment to children with exceptional needs to
cater their growth and learning. It should facilitate the children in such a way that they
learn how to cope with and associate with the other children under the regular
education. The classroom for children with special needs should cater the need that
they should learn and it should also help the learners with disabilities to help them
adjust if ever they will be in the regular class. Special education should secure
opportunities for students with disabilities to learn inside mainstream classrooms.

4. How does labeling and classification affect children with special needs in their
emotional, social and spiritual aspects?
I learned that teacher should not automatically label the learners with disability
especially if he or she did not have the proper assessment from the doctor. It is because
it can lower the self-esteem of the child and they can feel discriminated in many ways.
The learners with disabilities will feel they do not belong to the community because on
how we call them. As time goes by, every time they will hear other people call them
names or label them, they would ask other people or ask God why they are different
from other.
4.1 As a teacher, how can you help them cope with these challenges?
As part of the community and as a teacher I should help the people around me to
understand and never label them without proper assessment from the doctor and never
call them names that can affect their emotion and other aspects. In addition, as a
teacher I have to adjust my teaching style if ever, I will have a student with special
needs in the future. It is also happy to know that the school for them is developing and
improving.
5. SPED schools / centers are now all over the country. How do you assess the extent
of assistance they give to the community?
SPED schools are now in each of corner of our country, the Philippines. As what
I had observed that it helps the families that have learners with disability to mold the
children and to assist them in learning the basic things and the what is the essential
learning that they should learn. SPED also helps the community to openly welcome
those learners with disabilities and not discriminate them. It also opened the minds of
the people that all of the learners with disabilities are exceptional on their own ways.
6. The curriculum for SPED and the regular class is the same. Justify.
The curriculum for SPED and regular class is the same. The similarities of them
are obvious like they both work with students and teach. They both assess students to
evaluate their abilities. They do that in their own different ways but both curriculums do
it. The curriculum also requires to meet with the parents to discuss student progress.
Though general education teachers might only meet with parents to discuss their
behavior while special education teachers discuss progress. Teaching with special
education is about the same as teaching general education you just have to be a little
more flexible with how you teach. It’s like how a kindergarten teacher has to be flexible
because you don’t know how the children will react. Same thing with any special needs
student at any age. Both of the curriculum also has its own goal which is it can make the
learners a better individual.
