Tutorial 2

1. If the drum in Figure 4.4(a) is open to the atmosphere at the top, calculate the force on the
bottom.

2. Would there be any difference between the force on the bottom of the drum in Fig. 4.4(a)and
that on the bottom of the cone-shaped container in Fig. 4.4(b) ?

3. In Fig. 4.6 , the fluid is gasoline (sg = 0.68)and the total depth is 12 ft. The wall is 40 ft long.
Calculate the magnitude of the resultant force on the wall and the location of the center of
pressure.
4. Figure 4.7shows a dam 30.5 m long that retains 8 m of fresh water and is inclined at an angle θ
of 600. Calculate the magnitude of the resultant force on the dam and the location of the center
of pressure.

5. If the length of the tank in Fig. 4.24 is 1.2 m, calculate the total force on the bottom of the tank
