Question 1
Discuss what constitutes major and minor losses in a pipe and define the equivalent length of a
component (5)
[5]
Question 2
A 320 m long steel pipe transports water at a velocity of 2.5 m/s. The diameter and thickness of
the pipe is 250 mm and 8 mm, respectively.
2.1. Determine the critical period of the pipe (10)

2.2. Determine the pressure increase in the pipe for the times t = 0.2 s and 0.6s (20)

[30]

Question 3
Two water tanks A and B are connected to each other as shown in the diagram. The pipe
between the tanks has a friction factor of 0.0055 and is 200 m in length.

3.1. Determine the time it would take to transfer 35 m3 of water from Tank A to Tank B if the
initial difference in water levels, Δh, is 6 m. Include entry and exit losses in your analysis.
(10)

3.2. If it is required to include three 90° bends and a globe valve at tank B, determine how
much longer the water will take to transfer. The bends have loss coefficients of 1.1 and
the globe valve has a loss coefficient 5.8. (5)
