HRE 121: FLUID MECHANICS AND THERMAL PHYSICS

ASSIGNMENT 1
Due date: 05 / 05 / 23

Answer All Questions

1. Flow of fluids can be classified in to four types. With the aid of examples, describe
fully any two of these types of flow. [6]
2. Derive the continuity equation for fluids. [4]
3. Consider a fluid, flowing through a pipe with a cross sectional area that changes
along its length as shown below.

In the diagram above, if the radius at section 1 is 25 mm and at section 2 is 20 mm

and the mean velocity at section 2 is u = 3.0 m/s, calculate the mean velocity of
the entry point.
[5]
4. Consider a reservoir of water with an upper water level at 70 m above the outlet
nozzle of a pipe with diameter 40 mm. Assuming all friction in the nozzle and the
pipe to be negligible, calculate the following parameters at the outlet pipe:
(a) outlet velocity, [3]
(b) discharge out of the nozzle [3]
(c) mass flow rate [4]
5. The diagram below is illustrating a fluid which flowing through a junction such that it
splits in to two.

i. Deduce the continuity equation in this case. [5]

ii. At point 1 pipe diameter is 50mm and mean velocity is 2m/s. Pipe 2 takes 30%
of total discharge and its diameter is 40mm while pipe 3 has diameter of 60mm.
Determine the values of discharge and mean velocity in each pipe. [10]
