QUESTION 1
a) With the aid of a diagram, differentiate between laminar and turbulent flow regimes
developed in a circular pipe. (CO1-PO1)(C1)
(5 marks)
b) A circular pipeline transports oil with a density of 860 kg/m 3 at a rate of 3.5 m3/s through a pipe
system as shown in Figure Q1(b). Pipe 2 and pipe 3 have a diameter of 40 cm and 55 cm
respectively. Determine: (CO1-PO1)(C3)
i) the velocity of the o il in pipe 4 if the diameter of t he pipe at that section is 65 cm,
ii) the velocity in pipe 2 if the velocity in pipe 3 is 12.5 m/s, and
iii) the volumetric flowrate and weight flowrate in pipe 2.

QUESTION 2
A diverging tube shown in Figure Q2 discharges water to the atmosphere at h = 4 m. The area at Point
3, A3 is twice the area at Point 2, A2. Neglecting all losses, calculate the velocity and pressure head at
the throat (Point 2). (CO2-PO2)(C3)

QUESTION 3
a) A pressure hose was used to clean the outside windows of a building as shown in
Figure Q3(a). The 6 cm diameter hose is to carry 50 L/s of water with a starting
gauge pressure of 2.5 x106 N/m2 at point 1. The hose is attached to a nozzle with
a diameter of 3.5 cm at point 2. A person using a ladder is holding the nozzle at 5
m above ground. Neglecting all losses, calculate the pressure head at Point 2 in
terms of meter mercury. (CO2-PO2)(C3)

b) Referring to Figure Q3(a), if the pressure at point 2 is now given as 1.5 x 106 N/m2
but the discharge remains the same, using the momentum equation, evaluate
whether the water jet from the nozzle might break the windows. The windows can
withstand a force up to 4000 N. (CO2-PO2)(C5)
