INTERNAL ASSESMENT - II [Academic Year: 2017-18]

Sub with Code: Geotechnical Engineering (15CT53)

Semester/Section: V
Max Marks : 15 Time: 90 min
Note: Answer all the following.
Q.No CO/Marks
1 Explain the factors affecting the compaction CO2/3
OR
2 write about, (a) Total stress (b) Pore water pressure (c) Effective stress CO2/3

3 Write about process to determine coefficient of permeability in falling head CO3/3

test
OR
4 With neat figure write about determination of coefficient of permeability in CO3/3
unconfined aquifer.
Answer any three questions among 5,6,7 and 8
5 Following data is obtained from a standard proctor’s test: CO4/3
Water Content (%) 8.5 12.2 13.75 15.5 18.2 20.2
Bulk Unit Weight (kg) 1.80 1.94 2.00 2.05 2.03 1.98
a. Plot the compaction curve and determine MDD and OMC
b. Draw zero air voids line
c. Also calculate saturation at MDD. Take G = 2.7
6 In a falling head permeability test on a silty clay sample the following results CO4/3
were obtained. Length of soil sample = 12 cm, diameter = 8 cm, diameter of
stand pipe = 0.4 cm, initial head of water in stand pipe = 120 cm, final head
of water = 40cm, time of fall in head = 6 min. Find the coefficient of
permeability of soil.
7 Calculate and draw the total stress, pore water pressure and effective stress CO4/3
distribution for a soil profile with the properties as shown in Figure. 1.
Assume specific gravity of soil as 2.70.
8 A sand sample is tested in a permeameter 11.7 cm high and 10.15 cm in CO4/3
diameter, the quantity of water passing through the sample under an effective
head of 10 cm for a period of 90 seconds was measured 60 ml. Calculate,
a. Coefficient of permeability
b. Coefficient of percolation
c. Seepage velocity
Assume dry density of soil as 16.47 kN/m3 and G = 2.64
