INTERNAL ASSESMENT - II [Academic Year: 2017-18]

Sub with Code: Geotechnical Engineering – I (10CV54)

Semester/Section: V (2010 scheme students)
Max Marks : 25 Time: 90 min
Note: Answer all the following.
Q.No CO/Marks
1 (a) Explain the differences between standard and modified proctor tests. CO2/3
(b) Describe the effect of water content and compaction energy on compaction CO2/2
OR
2 (a) Explain the factors affecting permeability of soil CO2/3
(b) Describe (a) Total stress (b) Effective stress CO2/2

3 Write about process to determine coefficient of permeability in constant CO3/4

OR
4 With neat figure write about determination of coefficient of permeability in CO3/4
confined aquifer.
Question number 5 is compulsory
5 Data from a laboratory Proctor compaction test on clayey sand is as give CO4/7
below. Plot the compaction curve and find OMC and MDD. If specific
gravity of soil is 2.75, find the voids ratio and degree of saturation at OMC.
Water Content (%) 6.5 10.5 14.5 18.5 22.5 26.5
3 14 18.04 20 21.05 21 18.99
Bulk Unit Weight (kN/m )
Answer any three questions among 6,7,8 and 9
6 In a falling head permeability test on a silty clay sample the following results CO4/3
were obtained. Length of soil sample = 12 cm, diameter = 8 cm, diameter of
stand pipe = 0.4 cm, initial head of water in stand pipe = 120 cm, final head
of water = 40cm, time of fall in head = 6 min. Find the coefficient of
permeability of soil.
7 For the subsoil conditions shown in Figure.1, Calculate the magnitude of CO4/3
total stress, effective stress and pore water pressure up to depth of 5m.
Consider the capillary effect up to ground surface.
8 For a field pumping test a well was sunk through a horizontal stratum of sand CO4/3
14.5 m thick under laid by a clayey stratum. Two observation wells were
sunk at horizontal distances of 15m and 32 m respectively from the pumping
well. The initial position of water table was 2.0 m below ground level. At a
steady state of pumping rate is 925 lit/min, the draw downs in the observation
wells were found to be 2.40m and 1.20m respectively. Show the arrangement
in diagram and determine the coefficient of permeability.

constant head permeameter. Under a head of 60 cm, the discharge was 120ml
in 6 minutes. The dry weight of sand used for the test was 1120g and
