INTERNAL ASSESMENT - III [Academic Year: 2017-18]

Sub with Code: Applied Geotechnical Engineering (15CV53)

Semester/Section: V(B)
Max Marks : 15 Time: 90 min
Note: Answer all the following.
Q.No CO/Marks
1 Explain the classification of pile foundation CO2/3
OR
2 Describe the importance of sub soil exploration CO2/3

3 Write about negative skin friction of pile in compressible soil. CO3/3

OR
4 Write about different methods of dewatering technique. CO3/3
Answer any three questions among 5,6,7 and 8
5 A concrete pile of 45cm diameter was driven into sand of loose to medium CO4/3
density to a depth of 15m. Following are the properties of soil.
γ = 17.5kN/m3, ϕ = 30o, K = 1.5, δ = 0.75(ϕ). (Assume critical depth is far
below the base of pile.). Calculate safe load intensity if FOS is 2.5.
6 A precast concrete pile of size 40cm X 40cm is driven into stiff clay. The CO4/3
unconfined compressive strength of clay is 200 kN/m2. Determine the depth
of penetration of pile to carry a safe working load of 500kN. Assume FOS as
2.5 and adhesion factor 0.75.
7 In a site investigation to determine the depth of ground water table, the water CO4/3
in a borehole bailed to a depth of 8 m below the ground level and the
recorded raise in the water level in the borehole was as follows: h1 = 50 cm in
fisrt 24 hours, h2 = 30 cm in second 24 hours, h3 = 20 cm in third 24 hours.
Using Hvorslev’s method, compute the depth of the ground water table.
8 A sampling tube has diameter of 70 mm and cutting edge diameter of 68 mm. CO4/3
Its outside diameter are 72 mm and 74 mm respectively. Determine area
ratio, inside clearance, outside clearance of the sampler. The tube is pushed at
the bottom of the borehole to a distance of 550 mm with length of sample
recorded being 530 mm. Find the recovery ratio.
