QUESTION 1
a) A rectangular channel 5.5 m wide has depth of water 2.0 m. The bed slope of the channel
is 1 in 1100 and the value of Chezy's roughness is 60. It is desired to increase the
discharge to a maximum by changing the dimensions of the section for a constant area
of cross section, slope of the bed and roughness. Determine the new dimensions of the
channel and new discharge for the flow in the channel. (C02-P02) (C4)
(10 marks)
b) Two identical circular pipes carry flow of water from an open rectangular channel of 3 m
wide and 1.5 m deep. If the Chezy's coefficient for both circular and rectangular channels
is 100 and 120, calculate the diameter of the circular structure. Given the slope of the
channels is 0.001. Evaluate the depth of flow in the rectangular channel if the slope
redesign to 0.005. (C02-P02) (C5)
(10 marks)
QUESTION 2
a) A trapezoidal channel with a bottom width of 6 m has a side angle of 50° as shown in
Figure Q2(a). If velocity and depth of water in the channel are 2.76 m/s and 1.5 m, find
the critical depth, Dc of the channel. (C02-P02) (C4)

b) Water flows in a rectangular channel with a downward step as shown in Figure Q2(b).
The water depth at Di has passed through the critical depth, thus a hydraulic jump is
formed after the downward step. The conjugate depth D3 is three times higher than the
conjugate depth D2. If the unit discharge, q is 2 m2/s, estimate the depths D1, D2, D3and
downward step height, z. (C02-P02) (C6)

QUESTION 3
a) Explain the difference in pump performance between the pump in series and the pump in
parallel based on Figure Q3(a). (CO2-PO2) (C2)

b) Pump A provides 45 L/s at an 18-meter head with 7.5 kW of power, is being tested by a
group of students. They need to calculate the head and power required to operate Pump
B in order to deliver 55 L/s flow rate when the impeller diameter of Pump B similar as
Pump A. (CO2-PO2) (C3)
