INFLOW PERFORMANCE RELATIONSHIP ( IPR)
As we know from previous lecture that the
IPR is a straight line whose intersection with
the vertical axis yields the static reservoir
pressure.
The inverse of the slope represents the
productivity index of the well.

In single phase flow this is a straight line but

when gas is moving in the reservoir, at a
pressure below the bubble point, this in not a
linear relationship.
INFLOW PERFORMANCE RELATIONSHIP ( IPR)
Vogel's IPR is an empirical two-phase (oil + gas) inflow performance relationship correlation
published in 1968
Vogel’s main objective was to simulate two-phase flow through a reservoir into wellbore.
he assumed that :
➢ the reservoir was circular.
➢ completely bounded.
➢ fully penetrating well at its center.
➢ The formation was uniform, isotropic.
➢ constant water saturation.
➢ compressibility could be neglected.
➢ semi-steady-state flow occurred.
INFLOW PERFORMANCE RELATIONSHIP ( IPR)
For two phase flow ( oil + gas) in case of solution gas drive below bubble
point pressure, the IPR is curve and IPR is not constant ( change).
−𝑑𝑄
𝑃𝐼 = 𝐽 =
𝑑𝑃𝑤𝑓
Cases of curvature:
➢ Increase of gas saturation and decreasing of oil permeability.
➢ Increase of oil viscosity with pressure drop below bubble point pressure(
reduce Qo).

Importance of PI:
➢ For comparison of well productivity.
➢ Estimation of Pr at Qo= zero, and Qomax at Pwf=0.
➢ Evaluating of success or failure of stimulation process.
➢ Design of artificial lift equipment.
INFLOW PERFORMANCE RELATIONSHIP ( IPR)

Example :
Pr=2400 psi
Qo=200 bbl/day
Qw=300 bbl/day
Pwf=2200 psi
Find PI or J
Solution
𝑄𝑜 + 𝑄𝑤 200 + 300 𝑏𝑏𝑙/𝑑𝑎𝑦
𝑃𝐼 = 𝐽 = = = 2.5
𝑃𝑟 − 𝑃𝑤𝑓 2400 − 2200 𝑝𝑠𝑖
INFLOW PERFORMANCE RELATIONSHIP ( IPR)

Specific PI:
Is the ratio of the productivity index to the net thickness of pay zone : iy is used to compare
between different wells in given field.
𝐽 𝑄
𝐽𝑠 = =
ℎ ℎ(𝑝𝑟 − 𝑃𝑤𝑓)
Example :
Pr =2500 psi, Pwf=2200 psi, qo=200 bbl/day, h=20 ft.
Find J, Js.
Solution :
𝐽 𝑄 200 𝑏𝑏𝑙/𝑑𝑎𝑦
𝐽𝑠 = = = = 0.003
ℎ ℎ(𝑝𝑟 − 𝑃𝑤𝑓) 20 ∗ (2500 − 2200) 𝑓𝑡. 𝑝𝑠𝑖
INFLOW PERFORMANCE RELATIONSHIP ( IPR)

Productivity index from inflow equation:

PI can be derived from Darcy's law of radial flow as follows:

7.08∗𝐾𝑤∗ℎ(𝑃𝑟−𝑃𝑤𝑓)
𝑄𝑜 = 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟
𝜇𝑤 ∗𝐵𝑤∗ln(𝑟𝑒

Example :
An 8000 ft well on the 40 acre circle area has net thickness of 20 ft,
Assume Pr=4000 psi, Pwf=3800 psi, Qo=550 bbl/day, Qw=50 bbl/day, re=3 in=0.25 ft, Bo=1.25 Rb/stb, Bw=1.05 R/stb,

Calculate J based on (1) flow test, (2) radial flow equation:
Solution:
𝑄𝑜+𝑄𝑤 550+50 𝑏𝑏𝑙/𝑑𝑎𝑦
1) 𝑃 = 𝐽 = 𝑃𝑟−𝑃𝑤𝑓 = 4000−3800 = 3 𝑝𝑠𝑖
