Assignment # 2: Individual Work To be sent to: lm23@aub.edu.lb

Problem 1. Reservoir elevation

In the figure shown, the elevations of reservoirs A, B and D are given (Pick up your
own values based on the given table). Find the head of reservoir C if the power
extracted by the turbine (84% efficiency) is 5 kW and the flow into reservoir D is
0.2 m3/s. Assume your own values for the pipe material, diameters and lengths as
well as any other parameters needed to solve this problem. Comment on the values
of velocity in each pipe if they are acceptable and why.

Problem 2. Pipe Network
The system shown (galvanized iron pipes) is an existing network that needs to be
upgraded based on the request of the area’s municipality. This is due to an expected
increase in nodal demands. Prepare an assumed new table for these demands.
Introduce the following modifications, of your own choice:
1) Change of 12 pipe diameters and 12 pipes materials
2) Adding a pump in either loop 234, 245 or 6789.
3) Adding a turbine in either loop 234, 245 or 6789.
The head of the added pump or turbine is 10 m. Find the new head at node 7 relative
to node 3. The reservoir head is 80 m while all nodes are at 20 m elevation. Assume
flow directions to be correct and neglect minor losses.

Important Notes for assignment 2:
✓ Prepare a 6-7 min videotaped presentation to concisely explain HOW
would you have solved the above 2 problems.
✓ At the beginning of each problem, a clear statement of assumed values
for all required parameters should be included.
✓ All assumptions have to be mentioned.
✓ A brief discussion of the solution follows.
✓ Conciseness, clarity, general setup, professionalism and respect of time
limits all count.
✓ File names should include your names or at least your initials.
