The EarL of Oxford's March
by William BYRD (1540-1623)

William Byrd was one of the great English


composers of the Renaissance.
He served as a singer, organist and composer at the
Chapel Royal during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I,
and wrote very beautiful polyphonic choral music.

This tune comes from a set of keyboard pieces


called "The Battel", which was written shortly after
England's victories over the Spanish Armanda.

Toccata from l'orfeo
by Claudio MONTEVERDI (1567-1643)

The Italian composer Monteverdi has been called


"the Shakespeare of Music".
He was a very inventive composer who led the
way into the Baroque era, and along the way he
composer the first Opera - L'orfeo.

Monteverdi's music was the start of a new age


in music, called the Baroque.

Come Ye Sons of Art
by Henry PURCELL (1659-1695)
Perhaps the greatest of all English
composers was Henry Purcell.
Like William Byrd, Purcell sang at the Chapel
Royal. When his voice broke, and he became an
organ builder's assistant. Later, he would go on
to become Organist of Westminster Abbey.

Purcell began composing when he was just nine years old!

As well as being a composer,
Paganini was one of the
greatest violinists who ever lived.
Some people thought he must be in league with
the Devil, as he could play things on the violin
that were impossible for everyone else.

The Trout
by Franz SCHUBERT (1797-1828)
The Austrian composer only lived for 31 years,
but he wrote an enormous amount of music.
As well as nine symphonies, over 600 songs, and lots
of chamber music and piano pieces.

Schubert's music wasn't very well-known during his


life time, but after he died people began to realise
that he was a musical genius.

The Blue Danube
by Johann STRAUSS II (1825-1899)
Strauss was part of a very famous family of
composers from Vienna, in Austria.
They specialised in writing Waltzes which became
hugely popular all over Europe. Johann Strauss
Senior was a composer and orchestra, but he
wouldn't let his three sons become musicians. They
all chose to ignore him, and became successful
composers and conductors too.

Hungarian Dance number 5

by Johannes BRAHMS (1833-1897)


Many composer incorporated folk tunes into
their compositions.
As a young man, the German composer Brahms
became friends with a Hungarian violinist, who
taught him about folk tunes and gypsy music.

He also wrote hundreds of settings of German folk


songs.

Largo from the New World Symphony
by Antonin DVORAK (1841-1904)
Another composer who was greatly influenced by
folk music was Antonin Dvorak.
As a child he played in folk bands with his father,
and when he later wrote a set of Slavonic Dances
for piano they were so popular that the sheet music
sold out in a single day!

Later he moved to New York, where he wrote his


popular symphony, "From the New World".

Cleopha
by Scott JOPLIN (1868-1917)
A fantastic piano player, Joplin earned the
nickname the "King of Ragtime".
One of his first compositions was the hit tune
"Maple Leaf Rag", which made him very famous.

Ragtime was a popular music style in America in


the late 19th century, and its syncopated rhythms
led to the development of Jazz music.

The Great Gate of Kiev
by Modest MUSSORGSKY (1839-1881)

Mussorgsky was a great Russian


composer who belonged to a group of
musicians called the Mighty Handful.
He was close friends with the artist and architect
Viktor Hartmann, and wrote a set of piano pieces
that depicted Hartmann's paintings.

Hartmann designed a grand city gate to be built in


Kiev. It was never actually built, but was
immortalised in music by Mussorgsky.
