29. Briefly describe what a fish bowl discussion looks like. Then give an example of when
you might use one. Why?
*From pg. 107–108: In a fish bowl discussion, two circles of chairs are formed, one smaller
inside a larger. Then the class is split into two smaller groups. Each group takes a turn
discussing some topic in the smaller circle while the group in the larger circle observes and
takes notes on the discussion. During a parenting class, I might use a fish bowl discussion to
allow parents to observe a discussion amongst their children and then allow the children to
observe the discussion about their children and parenting. This could be an effective way of
helping both parents and their children understand the behaviors of the other and realize that
they do all really care about each other. It could help encourage a willingness for parents and
children to cooperate more.

30. Define each discussion skill and explain why each skill is important in the Family Life
education setting.
*From pg. 106–107: Answers should include a description of Structuring, Linking,
Summarizing, and Answering Questions. Example: Structuring is when the facilitator
clarifies the purpose and goals of a discussion. This helps keep the discussion within the
boundaries of the purpose of the group. Linking is when the facilitator identifies the
common themes and elements of the different members of the group. It helps promote more
interaction between participants as they realize they share similar feelings and beliefs.
Summarizing is when the facilitator emphasizes the important points from the discussion.
This promotes learning by both allowing the facilitator to clarify missed and misunderstood
concepts, as well as providing the participants the opportunity to put everything together.
Answering questions is when participants are given the opportunity to answer the questions
of others and can motivate participants to think, participate, and learn.
