TEST METHOD FOR DISTINCTION OF MAGE/GLOSS EDS-T-7907
ON PAINT COATING SURFACES

1. PURPOSE
This standard aims at specifying methods of measuring distinction of image (DOI) and gloss of automobile paint
coating surfaces.

2. SCOPE
This standard applies to measuring of distinction of image (DOI) and gloss of the automobile paint coating surface
(primer surfacer and top coat).

3. DEFINITION OF TERMS

3.1. Distinction of image (D.O.I.)

Degree of closeness of the reflected image to the original transparency level when an image is transmitted to the
surface at a certain angle. Low DOI means hazy coating surface. In general, bright metallic color exhibits low DOI
and larger aluminum flake quantity results in lower D.O.I.

3.2. Gloss
Ratio of magnitude of reflected light to that of transmitted light when a light is transmitted to the surface at a
certain angle.

4.4. Wave-Scan “D.O.I”

4.4.1. This device measures distinction, gloss and uniformity at the same time; combines the three attributes of
painting surfaces for overall surface quality assessment. (Combination weight values are specified separately.)

ON PAINT COATING SURFACES

5.1. Measuring with ATI DOI/gloss meter

5.1.1. Press "ON" and with the reference plate (correction plate) contacting the equipment, press "FUNC" "1" to
correct.
Repeat until correcting deviation become less than ±1. Cover the reference plate to prevent damage (scratch,
etc.).

5.1.2. Upon completing correction, press "SAMP" "1" and fix the DOI/gloss meter to the surface to measure.

5.1.3. Pressing "SAMP" after fixing displays DOI and gloss values.

5.1.4. Repeat several times (min. twice) and get the mean value.

5.2. Measuring with BYK haze-gloss meter

5.2.1. Correction is to be done once per two months with SET UP and OPERATE. Reference plates, with HAZE
and HIGH GLOSS, shall be protected from damage.

5.2.2. Press the button for the desired range. (20°,60°, 85°)

5.2.3. 4.5.3. Clean the surface of the test area using cotton rag. On a flat area, satisfactory measurements can
be found. If not, stick the tester on the surface according to the area nature and try the test again.

5.2.4. Lower the sample support table with the hand level or footswitch and have the sample face upwards.
Raising the support table displays the measured value on the instrument.

5.2.5. Repeat measuring several times (min. twice) and get the mean value.

5.3. QMS-GP MEASURING METHOD

5.3.1. After inserting battery to processor unit, lock with turning the battery retaining lever

5.3.2. Use sensor cable to connect a selected sensor unit to the processor unit and then turn on power to the
processor unit. (Sensor unit is classified, on a per-use basis, into final painting and electro painting, and semi-final
painting. Before the test, you must choose one of them to connect to the processor unit.)

5.3.3. The main menu includes three options of final painting, semi-final painting, and electro painting. Select
one by pressing its button and enter the assigned style number and color number.

5.3.4. Clean the area you want to find the measurements measure using a cotton rag. Apply a sensor to the
area and press the push button. The green light indicates that the process starts normally and the red light means
that the process has not been activated. For the red light, check whether the sensor is poorly applied positioned,
the target surface is too curved, the sensor is too early taken away, or the sensor moved during the measurement.

5.4. After the measurements on all the target areas, determine whether to save all the values.

5.4.1. For data display, turn the power off and separate the sensor cable and connect the monitor, mouse, and
the printer to your system. Then turn the power on and start the program.

5.5. Wave-Scan “D.O.I” measurement

ON PAINT COATING SURFACES

5.5.1. Turn power ON, perform zero setting of the device, and verify normal operating condition of the device.

5.5.2. Clean the area of measurement with cotton cloth, place the equipment on the measurement area and
press ‘OPERATE’ button.

5.5.3. When desired Organizer of measurement appears, press ‘MODE’ button.

5.5.4. When factor appears on the screen, conduct scanning at a constant speed. If scanning is done too fast or
over an area with excessive curves, error can occur.

5.5.5. When measurement has been done correctly, a short alarm sound is generated and the measurement
value is displayed.
