Overview: English Public Speaking

What is English Public Speaking?

English public speaking is an act of presenting, performing, or speech delivery in front of

an audience with a certain purpose(s) using English as the language.

In English public speaking, there are three types of audiences:

• Audiences who are watching live and face to face with the public speaker.

• Audiences who are watching live from media like online streaming TV or online

video.

• Audiences who are watching recording presentation or performance Although the

public speaker cannot see the audience, he/she must engage with the audience, grab

their attention and make sure the purpose is reached.

To be skillful in public speaking, it is acquired to practice the four bases of language learning:

• Listening skill > how you listen to your voice is the same as how the audiences listen

to your voice

• Speaking skill > how you will deliver your public speaking
• Reading skill > you are going to use cue cards communicatively and to enhance

fluency

• Writing skill > you write down your public speaking script.

What needs to be considered in English Public Speaking Delivery?

In any English public speaking activity, besides considering the content, you also have to

pay attention on your delivery. You must consider on your physical delivery and your vocal

delivery. The table below shows things that you should consider during your delivery. The first

is how you acquire the content, and the second is how you deliver it.

What is a speech?

Speech is one of the public speaking activities. Based

on the types, there is the persuasive speech of an event, the

informative speech of a place, the inspirational speech of a

person, the persuasive speech of an product, and the

informative speech of an issue.

Types of Speech

1. Informative Speech

The main purpose of informative Speech is to give educational information, and

provide enlightenment regarding a specific topic to the audiences. The engagement

should be with the topics that can help the audiences to understand a subject better, and

to remember what they learned later.

2. Persuasive Speech
The goal of Persuasive Speech goal to persuade and convincing the audiences to

believe and accept the speaker’s statement. It should be arranged in such way to make

the audiences to accept all part of the expressed view. It is important to know that not

every audience can be persuaded by one persuasive speech and not every prespective can

be accepted by the audience. The accomplishment of persuasive speech is measured by

the audience willingness to consider and approve the speaker’s statement.

3. Inspirational Speech

With some similarities to persuasive speech, inspirational speech goal is also to

persuade and convince the audiences to believe that it is possible to do the unlikely, With

the assistance of involving an up-lifting stories from speaker’s real life experiences, or any

famous stories from well-known people with the objective to create to build desire and

confidence to accomplish difficult goals and maximizing their potentials.

How to deliver a speech?

In preparing a speech, the speaker must feel confident, determine the delivery method,

and do the delivery. In delivering a speech, there are things that must be put in mind. They are

seen in the table:

writes down everything that is seen, heard, or experiencing

• Interview > the speaker finds the right informants for asking several questions for a

specific topic
• Online (internet) searching > the speaker searches or browses on the internet about the

information that relates to a specific topic)

• Library study > the speaker reads books that are related to a specific topic

• Documents study > the speaker tries to find out documents that are related to a specific

topic)

Extemporaneous Speech

Extemporaneous speech is a method of delivery where the

speaker carefully prepare and practice in advance. In the

extemporaneous speech, the speaker starts by writing down the

the whole full script in a set of cue cards.

During practicing, the speaker takes out the less important points. He then continues

practicing again. From the available points, he takes out again the less important points. He does

this until he finds out that the points written in the cue cards are the most important points that

will guide him during speech delivering.

1. Delivery

In delivering extemporaneous speech, you:

- Commit to a structure
- Practice Up to 10x
- Practice 1-2 Full sentences of note
- Limit your notes
- As you practice, say it in a variety of ways
- Practice Realistically
- Use different kinds of expression while practicing.
2. Cue Cards

Below is how to create a set of cue cards from the first practice until the last

practice of delivering speech.

In the first meeting and second meeting for your practicing, your cue cards are full of

complete sentences as below:

• In May, we went to Hawaii for the annual conference. A few of us visited several
clients while we were there.
• One of the issues we noticed was that our traditional business clientes did not see the
value in using social media to stay connected to their customers. They wanted to know
what the Return On Investment was.

• The way we ended up talking about it was as a way to reach tech-savvy existing
customers who are just growing into a place where they would need those types of
services. So, when we talk about targeting young customers, our clients began to
understand the value of hiring us for their social media management.

In the third meeting for your practicing, you decide the important points and delete the

unimportant words.

• In may, we went to Hawaii for the annual conference. A few of us visisted several
clients while we were there.

• One of the issues we noticed was that our traditional business clients did not see the
value in using social media to stay connected to their customers They wanted to know
what the Return On Investment was. Of course, that’s not easy to calculate as well all
know.

• The way we ended up talking about it was as a way to reach tech-savvy existing
customers who are just growing into a place where they would need those types of
service. So, when we talk about targeting younger customers, our clients began to
understand the value of hiring us for their social media management.
Step 3. In the fourth and fifth meetings for practising, you decide the important point

again from the available points on your cue cards and delete the unimportant points

again.

Step 4. In the sixth and seventh meetings for practising, you select the important points

again from the available points, and you delete the un-important point

• In may, we went to Hawaii for the annual conference. A few of us visisted several
clients while we were there.

• One of the issues we noticed was that our traditional business clients did not see the
value in using social media to stay connected to their customers They wanted to know
what the Return On Investment was. Of course, that’s not easy to calculate as well all
know.

• The way we ended up talking about it was as a way to reach tech-savvy existing
customers who are just growing into a place where they would need those types of
service. So, when we talk about targeting younger customers, our clients began to
understand the value of hiring us for their social media management.
This is how the process of how your cue card looks like:

In the beginning, your cue card looks like this:

• In May, we went to Hawaii for the annual conference. A few of us visited

several clients while we were there.
• One of the issues we noticed was that our traditional business clientes did not
see the value in using social media to stay connected to their customers. They
wanted to know what the Return On Investment was.

• The way we ended up talking about it was as a way to reach tech-savvy existing
customers who are just growing into a place where they would need those
types of services. So, when we talk about targeting young customers, our
clients began to understand the value of hiring us for their social media
management.

Then it looks like this after practising

• Went to Hawaii for an annual conference

• Our traditional business clients did not see the value in using social media.
• They wanted to know what the Return On Investment was
• Reach tech-savvy existing customers, and
• Targeting younger customers.

Then it looks like this after more practising

• Hawaii
• Tradtional clients
• Return On Investment
• Existing customers
• Younger customers
In the end, your cue card looks like this

• Hawaii
• Tradtional clients – R.O.I
• Existing customers
• Younger customers

In doing extemporaneous speech with the aid of cue cards and only points written

down there, the speaker is going to deliver it based on the way where he feels much more

comfortable. Any sentences do not hold his back. Therefore, he feels relaxed and enjoy

delivering his speech, and will be more optimally expressing himself.

3. Outline

With extemporaneous speech delivery, the speaker does not write his speech out

or memorize it. He occasionally refers to brief notes or recall from memory points, ideas

and specifics. In delivering an extemporaneous speech, preparation is very important.

The speaker must do a preparation. There is a 4-steps process:

1. Establishing a purpose

2. Gather data

3. Organize

4. Practice

In extemporaneous delivery, preparation is almost completely necessary for the

speaker’s success. He becomes confident with what he is going to say. He will feel more

relaxed and self-assured. He will deliver effectively, present with feeling, connect with the

audiences, and easily and quickly adapt for audiences\ understanding. He is urged not to
use manuscripts as a way to get around extemporaneous delivery, as his success will be

limited at all.

personal problems play a role in homeless.

II.Body

A. Personal problems are the 2nd most contributing problem for homelessness in the United

all women and children experiencing homelessness are flamed domestic violence.
Mental illness and addiction are also contributing causes of homelessness in the United
States.
2. According to the U.S. Conference of Mayors, only 16% of the single adult homeless

homeless people are nothing, they’re fable, they are not all there. I think people take that

A. Review of Main Points:
• Today I discussed the leading cause of homelessness, Poverty. Secondly, The
personal problems of homeless people. Lastly, I discussed the terrible act of
Dehumanization.
B. Restate Thesis
• Homelessness is a huge problem in the United States but the biased view of the
public regarding the causes and effects has led to unfortunate dehumanization and an
overlooked need.
C. Closure
• Actions drive from attitude and currently our attitudes stink. We give abuse rather
than compassion, beatings rather than sympathy, and avoiding eye contact rather than
addressing an issue with more vigorous action. It is clear that change must come from
within ourselves but the real question is, Are we willing to help?
Speech transitions?

Speech transitions are words and phrases that allow the speaker to smoothly move from

one point to another so that his speech flows and his presentation is unified. This makes it easier

for the audiences to understand

➢ Shift between similar points

Move from one point to a similar one:

Chapter 4
Persuasive Speech of a Product

Pre-Task

Comprehension

What is a product?

There are physically a product and virtually a product. Physically a product can be a

service, item, object, or a thing that is manufactured or refined for sale, to try, or to be consumed.

Virtually a product can be a currency or something such as a software and songs.

What is an example of a product?

Physical products include durable goods (cars, furniture, and computers) and nondurable

goods (food and beverages), the example is some food and beverage from West Sumatra such

as Minangkabau songs that has been released in the virtual world.

What is a persuasive speech of a product?

In the persuasive speech of a product, a clear purpose and structure are needed.

Persuasive speech of a product is highly related to the audience. The audience needs to know

why they are learning about this product. They need to learn it in a clear and structured way, in

order to persuade them to buy, sell, try or consume a product because persuasion occurs when

an audience assents to what a speaker says. Thus, persuasive speech requires more attention to

audience analysis.

What kind of information do we deliver in a persuasive speech of a product?

In many ways, a persuasive speech is structured like an informative speech. It has an

introduction with an attention-getter and a clear thesis statement. It also has a body where the

speaker presents their main points, and it ends with a conclusion that sums up the speech's main

points, with a significant difference.

The primary purpose of an informative speech is to explain. In contrast, the primary

purpose of a persuasive speech is to advocate the audience to adopt a point of view or take a

course of action. A persuasive speech, in other words, is an argument supported by well-thought-

out reasons and relevant, appropriate, and credible supporting evidence.

An example of persuasive speech of a product:

“Who says that nutritious and proteinous food is boring and unappetizing? Rendang, the

iconic beef cuisine from West Sumatra, and the number 1 CNN crowned best food in 2011, is

full of nutritional value and has a lot of protein that is good for your consumption. And most

importantly, it is really appetizing and tastes really good. Everyone who tried rendang never regret

Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone. And here it is.
[LAUGHTER]
[APPLAUSE]
No, actually, here it is. But we're going to leave it there for now. So before we get into it--
[LAUGHTER]
--let me talk about a category of things. The most advanced phones are called smartphones, so they
say. And they typically combine a phone plus some email capability, plus they say it's the internet-- it
sort of the baby internet into one device. And they all have these plastic little keyboards on them.

And the problem is that they're not so smart and they're not so easy to use. So if you kind of make a
business school 101 graphs of the smart axis and the easy-to-use axis, phones-- regular cell phones
are kind of right there. They're not so smart. And they're not so easy to use.

But smartphones are definitely a little smarter. But they actually are harder to use. They're really
complicated. Just for the basic stuff, people have a hard time figuring out how to use them. Well,
we don't want to do either one of these things. What we want to do is make a leapfrog product that
is way smarter than any mobile device has ever been and super easy to use. This is what iPhone is.
[APPLAUSE]
So we’re going to reinvent the phone. Now, we’re going to start with a revolutionary user
interface. It is the result of years of research and development. And of course, it’s an
interplayof hardware and software. Now, why do we need a revolutionary user interface?

I mean, here’s smartphon, right? Motorola Q, the BlackBerry, Palm Treo, Nokia E62.
The usual suspects. And what’s wrong with their user interface? Well, the problem with
them really sorts of in the bottom 40 there. It’s this stuff right here.

They all have these keyboards that are there whether you need them or not to be there.
And they all have these control buttons that are fixed in plastic and are the same for every
application. Well, every application wants a slightly different user interface, a slightly
optimized set of buttons just for it.

And what happens if you think of a great idea six months from now?You can’t run
around and add a button to these things. They’re already shipped. So what do you do?It
does not work because the buttons and the controls can’t change. They can’t change for
each application. And they can’t change down the road if you think of another great idea
you want to add to this product.

Well, how do you solve this? It turns out we have solved it. We solved it in computers 20
years ago. We solved it with a bitmap screen that could displayanything we want, put any
user interface up. And a pointing device. We solved it with a mouse, right?we solved this
problem. So how are we going to take this to a mobile device? Well, what we’re going to
do is get rid of all these buttons and just make a giant screen-a giant screen.
[APPLAUSE]
Now, how are we going to communicate this? We don’t want to carry around a mouse,
right? So what are we going to do? Oh, a stylus, right? We’re going to use a stylus. No.
[LAUGHTER]
No. Who wants a stylus? You have to get them and put them away. And you lose them.
Yuck. Nobody wants a stylus. So lets not use the stylus. We're going to use the best
pointing device in the world. We're going to use a pointing device that we're all born with.
We're born with 10 of them. Where going to use our fingers.

We're going to touch this with our fingers. And we have invented a new technology called
multitouch, which is phenomenal. It works like magic.

[LAUGHTER]
You don't need a stylus. It's far more accurate than any touch display that's ever been
shipped. It ignores unintended touches. It's super smart. You can do multi-finger gestures
on it. And, boy, have we patented it.
[LAUGHTER]
[APPLAUSE]
So we've been very lucky to have brought a few revolutionary user interfaces to the
market in our time. First was the mouse. The second was the click wheel. And now,
we're going to bring multi-touch to the market. And each of these revolutionary user
interfaces has made possible a revolutionary product, the Mac, the iPod, and now the
iPhone.
So a revolutionary user interface. We're going to build on top of that with software.
Now, software on mobile phones is like-- it's like baby software. It's not so powerful.
And today, we're going to show you a software breakthrough. Software that's at least
five years ahead of what's on any other phone.
Now, how do we do this? Well, we start with a strong foundation. iPhone runs OS10.
[CHEERING]
[APPLAUSE]
Why would we want to run such a sophisticated operating system on a mobile device? Well,
because it's got everything we need. It's got multitasking. It's got the best networking. It already
knows how to power manage. We've been doing this on mobile computers for years. It's got
awesome security and the right apps.
It's got everything from Cocoa and the graphics. And it's got core animation built-in. And it's got the
audio and video that OS10. Is famous for it's got all the stuff we want. And it's built right into
iPhone. And that has let us create desktop-class applications and networking.
Not the crippled stuff that you find on most phones. These are real desktop-class applications. Now,
one of the pioneers of our industry, Alan Kay has had a lot of great quotes throughout the years.
And I ran across one of them recently that explains how we look at this, explains why we go about
doing things the way we do. Because we love the software.
And here's the quote. People who are really serious about software should make their own
hardware.
[APPLAUSE]
Alan said this 30 years ago. And this is how we feel about it. And so we're bringing breakthrough
software to a mobile device for the first time. It's five years ahead of anything on any other phone.

Chapter 5
Informative Speech of an Issue

Pre-Task

Comprehension

What is an issue?

An issue is a matter which is currently popular in society. It is not a long-lasting matter

since it appears because of a reason. It can be an issue worldwide, or it can be an issue just in a

small town.

What is an example of an issue?

The lack of appreciation, desire and interest to the object on the current era, particularly

in the object origin, West Sumatra. The amount of people that are still showing interests on baju

kuruang is highly depeleted from time-to-time compared to the last few decades. People tends

prefer to wear modern and western influenced clothings than to wear baju kuruang.

What is an Informative speech on an issue?

It is a speech that shares issues that matter to the public speaker, or the public speaker

thinks it is essential to be informed to the society, so they know the fact.

What kind of information do we deliver in an informative speech of an issue?

Informative speech of an issue needs to be delivered with facts that can educate the

audience on the issue that are mentioned by the speaker. With an example of people losing

interest of Baju Kuruang in the modern era, The speaker needs to understand the issue of why

people losing interest, and prepare the speech. Know how to engage with the audience in order

to get their attention regarding the issue, and make sure they have every important information

so the audience and the speaker is on the same point of view, and without persuading or altering

the audience perceptions regarding the issue. There are some key takeways that can be

implemented when delivering informative speech of an issue:

• When choosing an issue, consider whether you want to describe, explain, demonstrate

or educate the audience about the topic.

• The issue should be one that can be communicated clearly to an audience.

• Consider what is the essential information that an audience should know about the issue.

An informative speech can be broken up into three sections:

Section 1: Introduction. The first section of the speech contains an attention-getter to grab the

audience's interest and orient them to the topic of the issue, a clear thesis that states the purpose

of the speech, and a preview of the main points of the speech.

Section 2: Body. The body provides your audience with all the information to understand your

topic. To make the body of the speech easier for the audience to follow, divide it up into at least

two but no more than five main points. Organize the main points in a clear structure appropriate

to the topic and thesis and provide supporting examples and/or evidence for each main point.
Section 3: Conclusion. The conclusion is a short section that reinforces the thesis, summarizes

the main points, and provides a sense of closure.

How do we deliver informative speech of an issue?

➢ The example informative speech of an issue, entitled “Between Two Cultures | Smrithi

Ram | TEDxUCincinnati”, as can bee seen on https://youtu.be/qv_UfDBNWI8

2. Baju Kuruang compared to the modern western clothings.

III. Conclusion

Baju Kuruang is not as desirable to be used as a daily clothings for people in

the modern era compared to the Western style clothings. It is because Western

clothing tends to be much cheaper and does not require special handling or care as

much as Baju Kuruang. But Baju Kuruang is still used for many special occasions in

Minangkabau region.

Guides

1. 4/3/2/ Technique

The 4/3/2 Technique is used for developing fluency in public speaking. It relies

primarily on repeated practice on the same material to be performed fluently by the

learners (Nation and Newton, 2009).

One speaker conducts three (3) times of talking to three (3) different listeners

about the same topic. The idea and the language item of the talk are based on the

speaker's choice in their domain. He/ she is given ten minutes of preparation for

organizing their talk. The duration of the talk for each delivery decreases from four (4)

minutes, three (3) minutes, and two (2) minutes. The talks are situated one-to-one

between the speaker and the listener, and each one is conducted straight after the

previous talk is over. While the speaker is talking, the listener should be silent without

interrupting or asking questions. Hence, they can come up with questions or feedback at

the end of the three talks (Nation and Newton, 2009; Nation, 1989).

2. How is The Best Way of Shooting

You and the cameraman work together to make what is planned in paper and writing

(shooting script) into a picture, an arrangement of pictures that can tell a story.

In making this video, you determine the type of shot taken in the scene by first preparing a list

(shoot list) of each scene. One sentence in the scenario (script) can be broken into four or more

shots.

For example:

Andi pulled the car aside when he saw Yuni walking in heat in the village alley.

Shoot the sentence as follows?

Long S: Wahoot (LS): Yuni is walking along the village alley while a car appears to be coming

from the same direction

Total Shoot (TS): Andi's car when Andi looks to the side from behind the glass of his car.

Close-Up (CU): Yuni's face looks sweaty.

Total Shoot (TS): Andi's car overtook Yuni and pulled towards Yuni
In a shoot that is made, you should note the time code at the start of the capture, the contents of

the shoot and the time code at the end of the scene to help the editing process later

The shooting result must be controlled to see whether the shooting result is really good or the

scene needs to be repeated.

In its implementation in the field, lighting must be considered. Contrasts need to be avoided in

order to create fairness in the lighting. Apart from lighting, sound also needs to be considered.

This is useful so that the sound you want to capture on the camera is recorded. Many things can

become a barrier, such as the sound of the wind and the mic being used.
3. How to Create a Youtube Channel?

Youtube channel is one of the applications on the internet where people upload

How to Create Cue Cards

One of the aids used by public speakers during delivering a presentation is a set

of cue cards. It is used to help the public speaker remember his/her lines. Cue cards can

be made from a piece of hard paper, and the size can be 15cmx 10 cm.

The front side of your card is where you are writing your text. The back can be

filled with pictures to make the cards beautiful. In writing the text, you have to make

sure that the text can be seen clearly. So you must write it down neatly. You also have to

remember that the picture you draw at the backside of the card must be nice but do not

grab the audiences' curiosity. Do not forget to give numbers on your cards so you will

not feel confused when accidentally the cards are mixed.

In holding your cue cards, you have to make sure that the position of your card

is not high to your chest or too low to your stomach. Just hold in on the right position

between your chest and stomach. While you are delivering your speech, full of emotions,
you have to make sure that your cards are not shaking around together with your body.

You have to control your hand during the speech delivery. Last, you have to ensure that

the cards are already in a good sequence. You may not arrange the cue cards during your

speech delivery. Preparation is important.
