Planning and Preparation:

Instruction:
● Problem Solving:
○ Using the CUBES Method: Underline the Important Words, Underline the
Question, Box the Key Words, Eliminate Extra Words, Solve by Showing
Words… (Evaluate and Make a Plan)
○ Problem #1: walked the students through the first word problem - step by step.
■ Great questioning skills as guiding students through the steps - utilizing
student responses to build and expand upon.
■ Great use of using partners to investigate and try to solve when stumped.
■ Open to different potential ways of solving the problems (actually
encouraged)
○ Problem #2: Students worked individually through the problem using the CUBES
method while circulating through checking on student progress.
■ Students were encouraged to investigate different options
■ As a large group - walked through the problem using student responses
■ Student demonstrated another solution (at the whiteboard while talking
through the steps)
○ Problem #3: Large group - Using the Cube Method
■ Students asked to come to identify each step of CUBES on the
whiteboard.
■ Students demonstrated and talked through different problem solving
methods
■ Ident
● Numeracy Vocabulary - reinforced the importance of using the appropriate vocabulary
Classroom Leadership and Management:
● Routines
● Student Engagement - through participation in solving word problems.
● Student success through gradual and step by step processes and recognizing that
mathematical problems can be solved in a variety of ways.
Assessment:
● Formative Assessment - Examples on the board, Clarification by questioning, Movement
● Formative Assessment - Questioning (diverse - talk to partner), allowing students
demonstrate and talk
