National Bird of Bangladesh
National Bird of Bangladesh
The national bird of Bangladesh is the Oriental Magpie Robin (Copsychus saularis).
This species of bird is widely recognized as the symbol of Bangladesh and is also
referred to as the ‘Doyel’. The bird is a small passerine species with a length of
around 20 cm, and a weight of 30-40 gms.
The Oriental Magpie Robin is native to the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia
and can be found in countries like Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia. The
bird is known for its distinctive appearance, which includes a glossy blue-black head
and wings, a white underbelly and tail, and a bright orange bill. The bird is also
renowned for its melodious voice, which is a typical feature of the Magpie Robin. Its
musical calls are heard early in the morning and late in the evening, and its sweet
chirps have become synonymous with the sound of nature in Bangladesh.
The bird was officially declared the national bird of Bangladesh in 1971, following
the country’s independence from Pakistan. The choice of the Oriental Magpie Robin
as the national bird was a symbolic gesture of the country’s independence and its new
identity as a sovereign nation.
