1. Introduction

Nippon Paint (Singapore) Co Pte Ltd requested Element Materials Technology Edinburgh to perform
coating testing on a multi coat scheme of at Zinky-22 Epoxy Zinc Rich primer 80 NDFT 75 µm, Hi-Pon
30-02 Epoxy MIO 80 NDFT 200 µm and Hi-Pon 50-01 Polyurethane Topcoat NDFT 60 µm in
accordance with ISO 12944-9 (2018), “Paints and varnishes – Corrosion protection of steel structures
by protective paint systems – Part 9: Protective paint systems and laboratory performance test methods
for offshore and related structures”.

Samples were supplied by Nippon Paint (Singapore) Co Pte Ltd in accordance with the requirements
listed within ISO 12944-9 (2018), “Paints and varnishes – Corrosion protection of steel structures by
protective paint systems – Part 9: Protective paint systems and laboratory performance test methods
for offshore and related structures”.

Corrosivity category is as defined in ISO 12944-2 (2017), “Paints and varnishes – Corrosion protection
of steel structures by protective paint systems -- Part 2: Classification of environments”.

Testing was performed between the 9th of July 2019 and the 31st of December 2019 at Element facilities
in Edinburgh.

2. Summary

The coating system is in general accordance with the requirements of ISO 12944-9 (2018),
Corrosivity Category CX (offshore).

4.1 Performance Requirements

4.1.1 Assessments before exposure to Cyclic Ageing Test

steel respectively and the first coat (unless pull-off values are at least 5MPa)

Adhesion
 ISO 4624 Minimum pull-off = 50% of original value. No adhesive failure between the substrate
and the first coat unless the pull-off value is 5MPa or more before and after test.

Corrosion from a scribe line


 After cyclic ageing in accordance with ISO 12944-9 Annex A corrosion at scribe shall not exceed
(when calculated using equation in Section 9.1) a maximum of ≤8.0mm as average value for high
impact areas, these include, floors, lay-down area; helideck, escape routes; splash zone – tidal zone;
other areas which are to be agreed between the interested parties or ≤3.0mm for all other CX
applications and reported with a precision of 0.1mm.

9. General Test Information

All test equipment and procedures are in accordance with relevant International Standard.

9.1 Ageing Resistance (ISO 12944-9:2018)

Scribe : 2mm x 50mm mechanically produced

Panel size: 150mm x 75mm x 5mm

Cyclic ageing: 72 hours exposure to UV (60°C ± 3°C) and Condensation (50°C ± 3°C)

In accordance with ISO 11507:2007

Alternating periods of 4 hours exposure

Type II UV lamps (UVA-340)

72 hours of exposure to salt spray in accordance with ISO 9227

24 hours of exposure to low temperature (-20°C ±2°C)

Duration of 4200 hours (25 cycles)

Calculate the corrosion of the substrate from the scribe, M, by measuring the width of corrosion at
nine points along the scribe and using the following equation:

Where W is the original scribe width in mm and C is the average of the 9 width measurements of
corrosion across the scribe in mm.

9.2 Adhesion

Adhesion testing performed according to ISO 4624:2016 and after 2 weeks of reconditioning.

Test panels were exposed in triplicate.
