Appa Bucket Hat

Crochet Pattern
Introduction
The Appa Bucket Hat Crochet Pattern is inspired by Avatar: The Last
Airbender’s character, Appa. He is the protagonist Aang's animal spirit
guide and is said to be a cross between a flying manatee and a flying
bison.

This pattern is intended for a STANDARD ADULT-SIZED HAT. If you are

going to create a smaller/bigger version, you may have to adjust the
numbers stated in this pattern.

I. Bucket Hat Pattern
The hat pattern is your usual bucket hat pattern. You may use your own preferred method of
creating a bucket hat. Nevertheless, the instructions written here is my go-to way of
crocheting a bucket hat.
NOTE: Ch 1 does NOT count as a stitch
Using your white yarn and your 4.5mm hook,
Row 1: Create a magic circle. Create 6 SCs into the magic circle. Sl st into the first st.
Row 2: Ch 1. SC inc in each st. Sl st into the first SC of the round. (12 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1. (SC, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC of the round. (18 sts)
Row 4: Ch 1. (SC, SC, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC of the round. (24 sts)
Row 5: Ch 1. (SC in the next 3 sts, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC of the
round. (30 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1. (SC in the next 4 sts, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC of the
round. (36 sts)
Row 7: Ch 1. (SC in the next 5 sts, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC of the
round. (42 sts)
Row 8: Ch 1. (SC in the next 6 sts, SC inc) 6 times
around. Sl st into the first SC of the round. (48 sts)
Row 9: Ch 1. (SC in the next 7 sts, SC inc) 6 times
around. Sl st into the first SC of the round. (54 sts)
Row 10: Ch 1. (SC in the next 8 sts, SC inc) 6 times
around. Sl st into the first SC of the round. (60 sts)
Row 11: Ch 1. (SC in the next 9 sts, SC inc) 6 times
around. Sl st into the first SC of the round. (66 sts)
Row 12: Ch 1. (SC in the next 10 sts, SC inc) 6 times
around. Sl st into the first SC of the round. (72 sts)
Row 13: Ch 1. (SC in the next 11 sts, SC inc) 6 times
around. Sl st into the first SC of the round. (78 sts)

Check if the current diameter of the piece is about

6.5”. This is the standard crown size for an adult
bucket hat.
Once done with the crown, we will now back loops
proceed with the “body” of the hat. We will
begin this part by doing our sts in the back
loops only (BLO) of the previous sts.
Row 14: Ch 1. SC BLO in each st around. Sl
st into the first SC of the round. (78 sts)
After Row 14, we will just do our normal sts.
Row 15-29: Ch 1. SC in each st around. Sl st
into the first SC of the round. (78 sts)
Wear the hat for a while and check if the
current height of the hat is about 3.5”. This is
the standard hat height for an adult bucket
hat. Check as well if fits well on your head.
Once done with the body, we will now proceed with the brim of the hat. We will begin this
part by doing our sts in the front loops only (FLO) of the previous sts.
Row 30: Ch 1. (SC in the next 6 sts, SC
inc, SC in the next 6 sts) FLO 6 times
around. Sl st into the first SC of the
round. (84 sts)
After Row 30, we will place our sts the
usual way.

front loops

Row 31: Ch 1. (SC in the next 13 sts, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC of the
round. (90 sts)
Row 32: Ch 1. (SC in the next 7 sts, SC inc, SC in the next 7 sts) 6 times around. Sl st into
the first SC of the round. (96 sts).
Row 33: Ch 1. (SC in the next 15 sts, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC of the
round. (102 sts)
Row 34: Ch 1. (SC in the next 8 sts, SC inc, SC in the next 8 sts) 6 times around. Sl st into
the first SC of the round. (108 sts).

times around. Sl st into the first SC of the round.
(114 sts)
Row 36: Ch 1. (SC in the next 9 sts, SC inc, SC in
the next 9 sts) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC
of the round. (120 sts).
Row 37: Ch 1. (SC in the next 19 sts, SC inc) 6
times around. Sl st into the first SC of the round.
(126 sts)
Row 38: Ch 1. (SC in the next 10 sts, SC inc, SC in
the next 10 sts) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC
of the round. (132 sts).
Row 39: Ch 1. (SC in the next 21 sts, SC inc) 6
times around. Sl st into the first SC of the round.
(138 sts)
Row 40: Ch 1. SC in each st around the hat. Sl st
into the first SC of the round.
We are now done with the bucket hat!
II. Arrow
Using your brown yarn and your 4.5mm hook,
Row 1: Ch 10. SC into the 2nd ch from your hook. SC in
each st until you reach the end of the row.
Row 2-30: Ch 1. Turn. SC in each st until you reach the
end of the row.
After Row 30, measure your working piece. Mine was
about 6.75”. It should be 0.25” longer than the diameter
of of your crown size.
Ch 3. FO.
Grab your yarn and attach it to the other side of the piece. Ch 4.
Row 4: SC into the 2nd ch from the hook. SC along the row until you reach the end of the
Ch 3 we did earlier before FO.
Row 5-7: Ch 1. Turn. SC2Tog into the first 2 sts of the
row. SC in each st until you reach the 2nd to the last
st. SC2Tog into the last 2 sts of the row.
Row 8: SC along the row.
Row 9: Ch 1. Turn. SC2Tog into the first 2 sts of the
row. SC in each st until you reach the 2nd to the last
st. SC2Tog into the last 2 sts of the row.
Row 10: SC along the row.
Row 11-12: Ch 1. Turn. SC2Tog into the first 2 sts of
the row. SC in each st until you reach the 2nd to the
last st. SC2Tog into the last 2 sts of the row.
Row 13: Ch 1. Turn. SC2Tog into the first 2 sts of the
row. SC in the last st.
Row 14: Ch 1. Turn. SC2Tog in the remaining 2 sts.
You should have 1 st left. FO and leave a long tail for
sewing. You are now done with your arrow! You can
either sew it onto the hat now or sew it later.
III. Horns
Using your brown yarn and your 4.5mm hook,

Row 1: Make a magic circle. 6 SC in first ch. (6 sts)

Row 2: SC inc. SC in the next 5 sts. (7 sts)
Row 3: SC, SC Inc in the next 2 sts, SC in the next 2 sts, SC2Tog. (8 sts)
Row 4: SC in the next 3 sts, SC inc, SC in the next 4 sts. 9 sts)
Row 5: SC in the next 3 sts, SC inc in the next 2 sts, SC in the next 2 sts, SC2Tog. (10 sts)
Row 6: SC in the next 4 sts, SC inc, SC in the next 5 sts (11 sts)
Row 7: SC in the next 4 sts, SC inc in the next 2 sts, SC in the next 3 sts, SC2Tog. (12 sts)
Row 8: SC in the next 5 sts, SC inc, SC in the next 6 sts. (13 sts)
Row 9: SC in the next 5 sts, SC inc in the next 2 sts, SC in the next 4 sts, SC2Tog. (14 sts)
Row 10: SC in the next 6 sts, SC inc, SC in the next 7 sts. (15 sts)
Row 11: SC in the next 6 sts, SC inc in the next 2 sts, SC in the next 5 sts, SC2Tog. (16 sts)
FO and leave a long tail for sewing. Do this one more time for the other horn.

Fill the horns with fiberfill or scrap yarn. Sew the horns at the sides of the middle section of
the bucket hat. Use the remaining front loops of the crown as a guide on where the horns
should be sewn. Make sure that the horns are of equal distances to the arrow sewn earlier.
IV. Ears
For the ears, we will just make 1 bigger circle in white and 1 smaller circle in brown.

To make the bigger circle, using your white yarn and 4.5mm hook,
Row 1: Create a magic circle. Create 6 SCs into the magic circle. Sl
st into the first st.
Row 2: Ch 1. SC inc in each st. Sl st into the first SC of the round.
(12 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1. (SC, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC of
the round. (18 sts)
Row 4: Ch 1. (SC, SC, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC
of the round. (24 sts)
Row 5: Ch 1. (SC in the next 3 sts, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into
the first SC of the round. (30 sts)
FO and leave a long tail for sewing. Repeat to create the other one.
To make the smaller circle, using your brown yarn and 4.5mm
hook,
Row 1: Create a magic circle. Create 6 SCs into the magic circle.
Sl st into the first st.
Row 2: Ch 1. SC inc in each st. Sl st into the first SC of the round.
(12 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1. (SC, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into the first SC of
the round. (18 sts)
Row 4: Ch 1. (SC, SC, SC inc) 6 times around. Sl st into the first
SC of the round. (24 sts)
FO and leave a long tail for sewing.
Place the smaller circle on top of the bigger circle. Use the long
tail from the smaller circle to sew the two circles together.
Once done, grab a darning needle with the long tail of your
bigger circle. Pinch about ⅓ of the end of the sewn circles and
sew them together to create the illusion of an ear.
Once done, with the remaining long tail, sew the ear onto the
hat, just below the horn we made earlier.
sew until
about here Repeat the process for the other ear.
Once you are done sewing everything together, weave
in the ends (or don’t ;)) and you are now done with
your own Appa Bucket Hat!
Please tag or mention me on your posts for your
versions of the Appa Bucket Hat! I would love to see
different versions of this hat :”)
I hope you enjoyed the process of making this hat as
much as I did designing and writing it.
I know this is a free pattern but donations are very
much appreciated!
