RAT CROCHET PATTERN

Rat Crochet Pattern
This pattern is to make a rat of approximately life size. The sample was made using dk yarn (light
worsted nearest US equivalent) and a 3.5mm hook. You can use any yarn so long as the hook used is
slightly smaller than that normally used for the yarn weight so that the stuffing does not show
through. Most parts of this pattern is worked in rounds in a continuous spiral. The feet and top of
legs are worked in rows. This pattern is written using American terminology. If you would like the
pattern in British terminology, then please download the other pattern or contact me for a copy.

Materials
 About 30g of yarn for the head and body
 About 10g for the feet and tail plus details on face
 6mm safety eyes (or these can be embroidered)
 Stuffing
 Yarn needle
 Crochet hook
 Stitch marker (I use a scrap of yarn)

Stitches Used
SS – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
sc2tog – single crochet two together
hdc – half double crochet

Some parts of the pattern require you to use the front loops only, this means inserting the hook
through the outer loop. You will also need to change colour to make the tail. This is done on the
previous stitch by pulling the new colour through the last two loops on the hook.

Head, Body and Tail

The head, body and tail are made as one piece. Stuff as you go along, though it is best to leave the
tail unstuffed.

are between rounds 8 and 9 and are 6
stitches apart. Where you crocheted
the front loops only in round 4 marks
the underside of your rat which should
help with placement. If unsure about
placement, you can add the eyes later

Making Up
Sew legs to the body
using the yarn tails.
The part of the leg
worked in rounds is
sewn to the underside
and the part in rows
to the flank. When the
legs are mostly sewn
on stuff the top part
of the leg then sew
the opening shut. Sew
feet to bottoms of
legs. Sew ears to head. Embroider the nose and mouth using long stitches. Whiskers can be made by
knotting yarn to sides of head and then separating the strands or if preferred you could use fishing
line or embroidery thread. Weave in any ends and you are finished!
