Making them super quick and easy to crochet.

What You’ll Need To Crochet Heart Coasters

You will need 100% cotton UK Aran/US Worsted weight yarn in any
colours you choose. I have used a selection of pastel colours to
match my favourite mug.

I have used Rico Creative Cotton Aran yarn, but this does tend to
split so it may not be suitable for beginners. You may want to use a
cotton yarn with tighter twists like Lily Sugar ‘n Cream.
You will also need a 5mm hook, or if you tend to crochet loose, use a
4.5mm hook. You want to keep the stitches tight making a smooth,
absorbent surface for your coasters. This also makes the coasters
firmer.

Let’s get started!

Crochet Stitches Used For The Heart Coasters

You will only need to know these few US stitches and terms to make
these coasters: (ch) chain, (sc) single crochet, (sl st) slip stitch. We will
also be using (sc2tog) single crochet 2 together, which will be
explained within the pattern. I will also explain how to finish with an
invisible join. I will also use the abbreviation (st) or (sts) for stitch/es.
To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or
the number of stitches after x. For example; {sc, 2sc,} would mean sc
into next st, 2 sc in the same next st. Or {sc x3, 2sc,} would mean sc
each into the next 3 stitches, 2sc in the next st.
Heart Shaped Coasters Crochet Pattern

The coasters are made in joined rounds, working around both sides
of a starting chain.

We will chain 1 at the beginning of each round to step up, but these
do not count as stitches.

Round 1.
Start by chaining 16, we will mainly be working along the top loops
of the ch sts.

work 2sc stiches in the 2nd ch from hook, sc x6 along the ch,

work this next part around both the top loop and back bump loop of
the next ch st, make 3sc in this same ch st, (working through both
loops here will prevent having a big stretched out hole in the middle
of your coaster)
continue along the top loops only of the chain again, sc x6, and make
2sc in the last ch st,

now work along the opposite side of the starting chain, start with a
sc in the opposite side of the same last chain (going in on the other
side of the slip knot), sc x5,

we will now work a sc2tog using the stitches on either side of the ch
opposite the 3sc sts, hook through the next ch and pull up a loop as
you would normally for a sc st (2 loops on hook), skip the next ch st
along which is opposite the 3sc sts, hook though the following ch
and pull up another loop (3 loops on hook), now yarn over and pull
through all three loops on hook, this completes the sc2tog st,

continue along the opposite side of starting ch, sc x6 bringing you

up to the opposite side of the first worked 2sc sts, sl st into the first
sc to join. Round 1 complete, you will have a total of 32 stitches.
Round 2.

ch1, work 2sc in the first st below, 2sc again in the next st, sc x7,

work 3sc in the next st (this will be the middle st of the previous 3sc
sts), sc x7,

work 2sc in each of the next 3 sts to work around the curve, sc x4,

work sc2tog, going in to the next st and the third st along skipping
the top of the previous sc2tog st,
continue sc x4, work 2sc in the last st and sl st into the first sc st to
join. Round 2 complete, you will have a total of 38 stitches.

Round 3.

ch1, 2sc in the first st below, sc in the next st, 2sc in the following st,
sc x9, 3sc in the next st,

sc x9, 2sc in the next st, sc, 2sc, sc, 2sc, sc x3,
sc2tog going in to the next st and the third st along (skipping the top
of the previous sc2tog st), sc x3, 2sc, sc in the last st, sl st into the first
sc to join. Round 3 complete, you will have a total of 44 stitches.

We will be following the same concept for the rest of the heart coaster,
working around the first curve, down the side, 3sc in the middle st of
the previous 3sc, up the other side, around the second curve, down
towards the middle, s2tog skipping the previous sc2tog st, back up and
join.

Round 4.

ch1, sc in the first st below, sc in the next st, 2sc, sc x2, 2sc, sc x9, 3sc
in the next st (middle st of previous 3sc), sc x9, 2sc, sc x2, 2sc, sc x2,
2sc, sc x4, sc2tog going in the next st and third st along (skipping the
top of the previous sc2tog st), sc x4, 2sc in the last st, sl st into the
first sc to join. Round 4 complete, you will have a total of 50 stitches.

Round 5.

ch1, sc in the first st below, 2sc in the next st, sc x3, 2sc, sc x12, 3sc in
the next st (middle st of previous 3sc), sc x12, 2sc, sc x3, 2sc, sc x3,
2sc, sc x2, sc2tog going in the next st and third st along (skipping the
top of the previous sc2tog st), sc x2, 2sc, sc x2, sl st into the first sc to
join. Round 5 complete, you will have a total of 56 stitches.
Round 6.

ch1, sc in the first st below, sc x3, 2sc, sc x4, 2sc, sc x11, 3sc in the
next st (middle st of previous 3sc), sc x11, 2sc, sc x4, 2sc, sc x4, 2sc, sc
x4, sc2tog going in the next st and third st along (skipping the top of
the previous sc2tog st), sc x4, 2sc in the last st, do not join this round
as we will finish with an invisible join. Round 6 complete, you will
have a total of 62 stitches

Invisible Join

This invisible join technique is used for a neat finish when working in
rounds

Cut the yarn leaving a couple of inches and pull the tail end up
through the last stitch. Using your yarn needle, thread the tail
through the second stitch along, skipping the first stitch.
Thread the tail end back into the middle of the last stitch making a
loop that looks just like the stitch tops, sitting on top of the first sc
stitch. Pull to adjust the loop so that it looks the same as the other
stitch tops.

You will find the first stitch top beneath sticks out a little at the back.
Thread the tail in through the top of this first stitch, bring the tail
back over and in the same place again and carry on threading
through the back of the next few stitches. This will flatten the stitch
down while weaving in the end. Weave the tail end back up along
the back of stitches in the opposite direction for a firm hold and trim
off excess.

Block your finished coasters to ensure a smooth flat surface by

simply placing a cloth on top and running a steam iron over them.

Congratulations!
