GRAMMAR

The Focus of This Lesson is 挺 + adjective + 的

挺好的 。
Tǐng hǎo de.
"It's pretty good."

Today we are encountered by yet another degree adverb, 挺 (tǐng). Like others such as 很，
真，太 (hěn, zhēn, tài), 挺 (tǐng) goes before the adjective to modify the degree of the
adjectives. However, always remember to put the particle 的 (de) to form the pattern 挺 +
adjective + 的 when using it. In addition, we often use 挺 (tǐng) in colloquial situations to
express the speaker's content or less intensive feelings. For example, in our dialogue, the
sentence 挺暖和的 (tǐng nuǎnhuo de) means, "It's pretty warm." Here are some other
examples.

For Example:

1. 这个节目挺好看的。
Zhège jiémù tǐng hǎo kàn de.
"This show is pretty good."

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Chinese Climate Control

The climate in China varies greatly from the tropical, humid weather found in the south, to the
dry, freezing weather in the north. China is notable for being one of the only countries to have
attempted "weather modification" to prevent rains and storms during important national
events. Rumor has it that Chinese scientists have seeded clouds with chemicals to
encourage or postpone rainfall to ensure blue skies during the Olympics and the 60th
anniversary of the Communist Party. It is not known how often this happens or the long term
effects on the environment.
