New Year’s Eve weather around the world


On 31 December of every year, people around the world celebrate New Year’s Eve. But the weather in these
places can be very different. In London, for example, the average temperature at night on 31 December is 7°C.
There is often some rain at this time of year. It’s not too cold, but people usually wear a jacket.
In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, it is usually about 25°C on New Year’s Eve. Many people go to the beach on this warm
night to welcome the New Year. They listen to music and watch fireworks.
In Hong Kong, the temperature on New Year’s Eve is usually about 18°C. Sydney, Australia and Cape Town, South
Africa are also about the same temperature at that time of year. It’s not very cold.
New York City, on the other hand, is often very cold in December. Sometimes it can be -13°C at midnight on
December 31! On this night, thousands of people stand in Times Square, in the centre of New York City, for more
than ten hours to wait for the 1st of January to come.
