Analyse
qualitatively the salt (C-16)containing one cation and oneanion applying formalgroup

analysis.

Procedure
of anion
Identification
Preparation of Sodium CarbonateExtract :
Mix thesalt with sodium carbonate in 1:3ratio and
15 ml of distilled water in a test tube. Boiland cool. Filter the contents. The filtrate is called sodium

carbonate extract.

S.No.
Experiment Observation Inference

1. Neutralise about 5 ml sodium carbonate White ppt.

of is formed. SO suspected
extractwith dil. HCl and add BaCl, solution.

2. To the above contents, add dil. HCI. The ppt. does not dissolve in SO confirmed
it.
Identification of cation
Preparation ofOriginal Solution (0.S.) The : original solution is prepared in dilute nitric acid

S.No. Experiment Observation Inference

1. 0.S. + dil. HCI. No ppt. is formed. Group I absent
2. Pass H,S gas to this solution. No ppt. formed.
is Group Il absent
3. Boil off H2S gas from the above solution. Now A gelatinous white ppt. is formed. Group Ill present
add a pinch of NHCl and excess of NH,OH
solution.

4. Filter the contents. Retain the filtrate for

subsequent groups. Dissolve the residue in

minimum amount of dil. HCI and divide the

solution into two parts :

(a) To the first part, add solid NH,CI and excess A white gelatinous ppt. is formed. Ar3 confirmed
NHOH solution.

(b) To the second part, add few drops of blue floating blue lake
A is formed. AIt confirmed
litmus solution and NH,OH solution drop
Wise.

Result
The given salt (C-16)contains :

Anion : Sulphate (SO)

Cation : Aluminium (AIt)
