Exercise 5

Vignette: Can Focus Harm?

This is an interesting example and I liked where one of the questions at the end was asking

about if the genders were reversed. I liked that because halfway through I had to stop myself and

think the same thing before I went on. I realized that my feelings were not as strong if it had been

reversed. I do admit I agree with the author that males have more of a reputation for being more

inappropriately sexually.

I think that the way the supervisor Peter handled it was very well and he made sure to hit all

the important things. I liked that he made sure to talk to both and asked Margaret if she would be

comfortable talking to Geoff herself first. He also made sure to ask if she had said anything

herself to him. While this can seem unsensitive I think it is important to know in general if she

has tried to change the subject or tell him how she feels or if she has just been too uncomfortable

to do that. A standard for this would be III-48 & III-49 which is supervision, and this makes

sense because Geoff and Peter were using supervision for this.

Vignette: Countertransference

If I were the counselor in this situation, I think it would be very hard to realize what is

happening. It is obvious from the outside that this resident reminds us of Irene and that is

comfortable to us. But you do not want to favorite one person or have someone who is your lease
favorite either. Either way can harm the client in their progress and recovery especially if you are

finding ways to keep them in the program.

I do not know of any relationships from my past that I can see influencing my future

professional behavior but if it does happen someday, I hope that I am able to notice it and stop

the different treatment. The ethical standard I would relate to this is VII-24 & VII-25 because

they are both about dual relationships.

Vignette: A Friend in Need

The one main thing that we were told growing up while growing with social media is that

what you put online will stay with you forever. So I have always been incredibly careful to watch

what I post and what others tag me in because I do not want to be affiliated with anything

negative or bad. I think it is super important in this field to not have anything crazy pop up when

a client or future employer goes to google you.

I do understand and realize that you can not have control of everything posted online

about you, but the things you do have control over you should be careful of. The things that you

do not have control over hopefully are not huge things like in this example where he is quoted on

a organizations (that he does not believe in) brochure. Ethical standard III-2 which is integrity

would apply because it talks about the counselors personal life outside of work and online.
